Mission Statement:
The mission of the CAMC Greenbrier Valley Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program is to train future family medicine physicians to provide affordable, extraordinary quality and compassionate care to the diverse population of southern West Virginia.

Comprehensive Clinical Training

Currently, we are a team of 12 residents dedicated to Rural Medicine and Community outreach. Our program offers rotations at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Robert C. Byrd Clinic and The VA Medical Center. We are currently in the process of gaining Osteopathic Recognition, however, we have historically had a strong Osteopathic Curriculum for both Osteopathic and Allopathic residents through combined didactics and ONMM rotations.

Our Rural location allows our residents to practice full scope family medicine for inpatient, outpatient, Wilderness Medicine and CAMC Inpatient Pediatrics. During inpatient rotations, we are first assists for hands-on procedures such as Central lines, intubations, knee injections and more.

Our residents have a 100% Board Certification and many of our residents have graduated to become outpatient clinicians, Inpatient Hospitalists, Nocturnists, Fellows in Geriatric and Emergency Medicine, Program Directors and Chiefs of Staff.

In 2023, our hospital was purchased by Charleston Area Medical Center. The support and opportunities have been endless with this transition.

Greenbrier Valley Medical Center has a rich history that is very much a part of the community it serves. Greenbrier General Hospital opened in 1907 in Ronceverte, WV, and the facility quickly began to play an indispensable role in the region’s development.

In 1974, a new 122-bed facility was constructed at the hospital’s current location at 1320 Maplewood Avenue in Ronceverte. Today, Greenbrier Valley Medical Center provides quality patient care and exceptional service to the residents of southeastern West Virginia and beyond. The hospital is one of Greenbrier County’s largest employers with more than 400 employees, offering a wide array of medical, surgical, and outpatient services that are not typically available at rural hospitals.

GVMC serves as a teaching facility for family medicine residents from medical institutions all over the country including the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, which provides a cutting-edge approach to medical education.

Residents rotate and participate in continuity clinics at Robert C. Byrd Clinic and the Beckley VA Medical Center. The VA facility offers rotations in dermatology, geriatrics, pulmonology, psychiatry, pain management and more.

Family Medicine Residency

Greenbrier Valley Medical Center is an ACGME accredited Postdoctoral Training Institution. Our goals are to:

  • Enhance the integrity of the osteopathic profession by promoting collaboration among hospitals, colleges of osteopathic medicine and physicians.
  • Provide quality education and training for osteopathic students, interns and residents so they may better serve the nation’s healthcare needs.
  • Promote innovation, creativity and excellence in undergraduate and graduate medical education.
  • Support the development of osteopathic primary care physicians and specialists who, recognizing the interdependence of the body’s systems and the ability of the body to heal itself, are committed to providing holistic health care.
  • Provide well-trained interns and residents to improve patient care in under-served and rural areas.
  • Foster research in areas such as basic medical sciences, clinical medicine and public health policy.

Dr. Gaite

I am the Chief Resident for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Greenbrier Valley Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program fostered my passion for practicing outpatient medicine with an emphasis in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Additionally, the curriculum allowed me to shape my education with first-assist hands-on experiences with procedures I am most interested in. Because of the supportive faculty and staff, I also pursued additional leadership opportunities with WVSOM Alumni Association and ACOFP to advocate for my fellow residents locally and nationwide.

Choosing the CAMC Greenbrier Valley Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program felt like a natural fit for me. I am from a small town much like Lewisburg and rural health is important to me. GVMC offers a great mix of hospital medicine, outpatient family medicine and electives - and a true rural health experience.

Then, there's the town itself- simply beautify. It offers a peaceful escape, a spot to catch a breath and unwind amidst the daily hustle and bustle, adding a refreshing touch to everyday life. I also love how friendly and supporting everyone is. This is great for residents like me to have passionate and experienced mentors and a modern, hands-on learning environment.

All in all, I feel this program offers the perfect mix of a close-knit community, a beautiful setting and a supportive work atmosphere - exactly the kind of place to grow professionally while enjoying every step of the journey.

Michael Yost

I am a Native to Southern West Virginia and a PGL 2 resident at CAMC Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. I chose this program due to my interest in learning how to practice full scope family medicine in a rural setting. This program has given me the opportunity to learn in a strong out-patient setting under the experience of our attendings who are dedicated to our education. At the same time, my education has been broadened with our affiliation to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and Beckley Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Additionally, I have established a strong foundation for rural in-patient medicine through my training at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. These experiences allow for a comprehensive training environment to establish residents as competent providers by graduation.
