When taking my photo, Built Tough, I was in a tennis court in the community center of my neighborhood. This community center is where I practice for basketball. Although I come home sweaty and tired, I always come back stronger and better than I was before. This shows that I am resilient. My photograph also represents the theme resilience, which means to recover extremely quickly after a difficult situation, for example the almost 2 years of Coronavirus and quarantine. We are built tough, just like an athlete when they suffer a big loss, injury, or bad season, and they always come back stronger. Just like us as a society, we are coming back stronger after the difficult two years. We are all resilient in our own ways and make each other stronger! We are built tough!

The photo is an image of a pier during a low tide showing all of the limpets that are usually hidden under the water holding on. This relates to resilience as they are taken outside of their comfort zone, in a place very different from their home, but they are staying, they are hanging on as well as they can so that when the tide comes back up they can be at ease again. They are staying resilient through these times.

Fires burn
The hillside all gray
Dead plants start to decay
But this plant…
It’s returning to see another day

When I was hiking, I noticed that all around me, there were burnt trees and dead shrubs. Then, there was a singular bright green plant, growing in the center of a patch of burnt plants. This represents resilience to me because this plant was able to grow, even after pretty much the whole area got completely burnt.

With the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Russia, I wanted to display the strength demonstrated by the Ukrainian people. The hardships, strain, and adversities these people have had to endure recently is heartbreaking to witness. However, the determination the Ukrainians have displayed is incredibly inspirational. To bring these emotions to life, I tried my best to convey their strength, pain, and resilience into my portrait.

By using a printer at home, I pressed my face against the scanner and scanned my face. I then imported the photos to a computer.

I decided not to digitally edit this photo with any software. I wanted the portrait to be seen in its original and raw form. I don't want to show a perfect and flawless image. I want to show the truth.

Covid-19 has prevented us from enjoying everyday activities, like going out. We still continue to wear masks everyday in hopes it gets better. We have all faced some type of loss, but humanity still continues to change our lifestyles to adapt to our current circumstances. This photo represents how we all hope for change, but in the meantime, we must stay resilient for everyone’s safety.

"Some of us have danced together since kindergarten. We are very close. We have been dancing together for years,” said Lillian. Growing up together in a small town means special relationships. After two years of Covid and no performances, the girls are waiting to go on for the Christmas 2021 show. Sissy’s hands are wrapped around someone’s ankle for comfort. Together there is resilience.

Resilience is being able to adapt, overcome and move past difficulties. This photo shows the resilience of Native American culture for the past 500 years being preserved and passed down to the next generation. Native American culture gives foundation and structure to move forward into the future.

This is my grandpa working on his beloved 1953 Ford in his garage. He bought this car in 1974 and since then, it has gone through two color changes and been taken apart over and over again. Today, it sometimes doesn't start, but my grandpa continues to work on it until it does. Resilience means adapting to change and is the ability to keep going in the face of adversity. Both my grandpa and his car have gone through a lot, yet both are still here.
