Local and state officials and water industry stakeholders testified at a Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Water hearing on lead pipe replacement efforts and improvements to wastewater systems. Topics included economic opportunities for disadvantaged communities, flexibility using federal dollars, replacing outdated drinking and wastewater systems, environmental impacts, and testing for contaminants in water systems. Witnesses included Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Ras Bakara (D), who implemented a lead service line program that led to the replacement of the city’s more than 23,000 lead lines in three years, at no cost to residents. close
