Unlocking the value of the Ocean

We are building the technology you need to obtain near real-time operational metrics to quantify the performance of your ocean-based operations and enable decision making in the ocean.

Assessment tools in the ocean are outdated and lack operational capabilities.

Ocean monitoring is expensive and complex, and it provides very important but sparse and incomplete data, which falls short of the actionable information needed to assess human interventions in the ocean.

To bridge the information gap, ocean simulations are needed. But, ocean simulation systems available today are slow, coarse, cumbersome and very expensive: they require a team of experienced ocean scientists and expensive supercomputers.

As a result we lack the operational monitoring and modeling solutions needed to enable new ocean-based technologies.

We integrate advanced ocean simulation capabilities with targeted monitoring assets to provide operational metrics in near real-time.

We are making a new generation of ocean simulation codes operational:

  • >100x faster than legacy ocean simulation systems: enables real-time assessments and unprecedented forecasting capabilities.

  • Affordable: we no longer need supercomputers for advanced ocean simulations.

  • Down to the meter scale: thanks to our multi-scale simulation approach we can now resolve all the relevant physical and biogeochemical processes down to the meter scale.

  • Less monitoring data required: our ability to design targeted monitoring operations combined with the resolution of processes down to the meter scale results in the need of significantly less monitoring data.

The atdepth platform:

We are building a cloud-based platform where our clients will be able to track the operational metrics they care about, in near real-time, and with very high reporting frequency. We will also provide access to forecasting capabilities and many other relevant features.

Founding Team

  • Dr. Carlos Muñoz-Royo

    CEO, Co-Founder

Carlos is an MIT PhD ocean engineer and naval architect specialized in the integration of large-scale field studies with physical oceanography modeling. Carlos has successfully designed, managed and implemented large-scale monitoring studies of ocean transport in the ocean. Carlos has also worked extensively on economic modeling of offshore industries. Since 2020 and together with Raphael and Thomas, Carlos has successfully run an offshore industry consulting entity.

  • Dr. Raphael Ouillon

    CTO, Co-Founder

Raphael is an expert at numerical modeling of fluid dynamics and transport processes in the ocean. Raphael has extensive experience deploying highly-parallel computing systems on a range of high-performance computer architectures, including CPU and GPU-based supercomputers both in an academic and commercial setup. Since 2020 and together with Carlos and Thomas, Raphael has successfully run an offshore industry consulting entity.

  • Prof. Thomas Peacock

    Senior Advisor, Co-Founder

Thomas is an expert in conceiving and executing ocean research projects, incorporating theory, field studies, modeling, and instrumentation development. He has been on the MIT faculty for 20 years, where he is Director of the Environmental Dynamics Laboratory (ENDLab). Tom is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award in Physical Oceanography. He has run major field programs across the globe (Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, South China Sea) and was the lead-PI on an NSF MURI that developed new software and ocean measurement methodologies for search-and-rescue operations in collaboration with the US Coast Guard.
