To change time and date along with other things: With time and date showing, press and hold the SET/RECALL button. You are going to toggle through the next functions using the MODE button. The 1,2,3 after that are different time zones which doesn't explain which is which though. After that it starts with the hour. To change, use the START SPLIT button to increase the hour or use the STOP/RESET button to decrease it. When done with hour, then press the MODE button which will take you to the minute change. Use same procedure for the rest. Finally press the SET/RECALL button to finish.
You have the option to change the order of the month and day, either the American (Canada, Japan, China, etc.) month first then the day, or the European day first then the month. You can also use the regular 12 hour time format or use the 24 hour clock one (also called military time).
I like the looks of the watch (black/yellow version). The watch isn't overly large, yet the time and date are larger and much easier to read at a glance than many other type watches, so that's a big plus for many that find it harder to read smaller watch dials. I also own a Casio G-Shock Mudman watch which is also an excellent watch, but this one is so much easier to read. The other functions are nice to have, but you'll be using the time and date the most. The indigo light lights up the numbers really well in the dark. When the battery does goes bad eventually like all digital watches will eventually, Timex strongly recommends that a retailer or a jeweler replace the battery (CR2025 printed on the back of the watch). Of course the more you use the other functions, the shorter the battery life. So if you mainly choose this watch for the looks and larger easier to read dial, it'll last you much longer and probably for many years.
As an example, I bought my Casio G-Shock Mudman watch exactly 11 years ago here on Amazon and is still running fine (but I didn't really need the alarm and other functions and didn't use them much), with only a broken band issue later. The time does run seconds fast though each month so I've had to set the time back a little routinely. Only time will tell how accurate the time will be remain with my new Timex one. I hope the information I provided helps.
Timex advertisement slogan: It takes a beating and keeps on ticking! One last humorous note: John Cameron Swayze (an American news commentator, spokesman, and game show panelist during the 1950s), used to do Timex commercials on television years ago promoting how indestructible they were. Watching the funny outtakes promoting Timex watches, one ad was where he was in back of a large tank of water with an outboard boat motor hoisted above the tank. Wearing safety goggles, he attached a Timex watch to one of the propeller blades, lowered it into the water and turned it on. After shutting it off and raising the motor, he couldn't even find the watch.
Upshot: replaceable band, training log, interval timer, and durability are what make this watch stand out.
(though, like other reviewers, I'm annoyed by the logo covering part of some digits at the top)
Pros:
It's durable. I've dropped it from a moving bike onto concrete, no problemo. Snorkeled down to 20ft in salt water, fine.
- 3 years into ownership, the only sign of age is some lettering on the button labels is wearing off. (INDIGLO now looks like "INDIGIC")
The band is replaceable, even if that's after some effort, it still beats the "sleek" watch I used to use.
The training log lets me get a few days behind on my paper log, and still let me keep my split times in memory.
The interval timer is great, and easy enough to use.
The regular timer is a separate feature (unlike my old Soleus), and I use it often.
The biggest button is the lap/split button on the front (unlike the Soleus and my old Casio), which is the right place. While swimming I was unable to reliably use the LAP button on those other watches.
Flix annoys me to no end. This watch does not use Flix. That's a positive note.
It lacks white lettering on the band, so I'm not embarrassed to wear it to meetings.
Cons:
There's a logo obscuring the top element of three digits on the top line of the screen. Why?
The band isn't standard, and has to be replaced by Timex, generally via telephone order, around $15. I'd prefer a standard 22mm band.
... (you could force a standard band on there, but it would look funny)
In normal use, the big button changes time zones. This is annoying when I'm resting my arm on something, then suddenly I'm 3 time zones away.
In real use, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Especially when comparing it to other sport watches, this particular model of Ironman is totally superior.
Besides it's seeming durability (though it has another year to truly prove that to me), it's 50 lap memory is great for track workouts, it IS waterproof as I've swam with it after almost every run (so far about 40 times). It's easy to use, buttons make sense in their locations and their functions, and it's very readable with a big screen.
The only con is, as others noted, the lousy "Ironman" word and logo are on the watch quartz face and both the ink and the shadow from it sort of reduce readability. It's no biggie, but it is very stupid placement on the designers' part!
Highly recommend it and love using it!
Top reviews from other countries
Compared to other Timex watches I have (classic 100 and original 30) this is the largest of them. With that said it's also very flat and low profile so would fit under a sleeve quite easily. The benefit of this watch over the similar 30 lap in this style is the addition of a 2-step interval timer, afaik this isn't available on the medium sized variants. There is also a basic/standard cdt, both of which can be set to auto-repeat if need be.
The LCD display is clear and digits large and easily legible at all angles. The indiglo function works as expected/stated, lighting up the digits instead of the whole screen, something I feel is more fitting and effective for use in dim or lightless conditions.
All other functions are top notch as per usual for Timex, Chrono easily settable to count laps as well as navigate thru after a run for e.g, alarms settable to weekend/weekday/daily although this model has the additional setting to specify a certain day as well. The tones and alarms are loud and clear and will suit most potential buyer's needs imo. Although there is no world time function the watch provides dual time where a second time zone can be set and accessed by the front start/stop button, for most needs I think this is suitable. Colorway-wise I think it's nicely balanced and muted, although the white can look a little jarring (a small amount of enamel paint can resolve this) although I'm just being pedantic here. Personally I think it looks slicker and all round cooler than the similarly functioning Sleek 50 (also features a 2-stage interval timer).
Would recommend, although I noticed the price has gone up, Worth 33 quid I paid for mine.
