Overview

Content licensing is a key component of the online scholarly publishing environment. This course provides an overview of why licensing is needed, how it works in practice, and the key issues to consider when negotiating and agreeing licenses. It aims to give delegates a full understanding of the range of license arrangements that are available, and practical guidance in how to manage them. In addition to covering licensing for online content (with a focus on third-party licensing), we also review current issues in author licensing, particularly open access and Creative Commons, and discuss recent market trends (such as the EU Digital Single Market) that may impact licensing activity.

• Author licensing, acquiring and exploiting rights
• Types of licences and agreements, both direct & third party
• Licensing in practice: publisher ‘must have’ clauses, and customer requirements
• Key issues with aggregators and other types of third-party vendors
• Case study discussion on third-party licensing strategy & implementation
• Current market trends & issues, including new technologies, open access & legislative developments.

What will you learn?

Fully understand the types of agreements used to license content, why certain clauses are included for the publisher and customer and how to manage the licensing process in practice. Gain an understanding of current legal and market issues affecting online content, and the implications for publishers.

Who should attend 

Delegates should have a grasp of the copyright and legal framework (such as provided by ALPSPs Understanding Copyright). This course is aimed primarily at delegates working with licensing products to customers directly or via a third parties. It will therefore be suitable for attendees in rights & licensing, contracts, sales, marketing and library relations functions.
