Towards a climate-smart Africa - The AfDB and CIF partnership - November 2022

The African Development Bank plays an important role as a CIF implementing entity, advancing a growing portfolio of projects in renewable energy, forestry, and resilience solutions in Africa.

With CIF support, the Bank currently nances 39 investment plans in 27 countries and 1 region to transform their economies through renewables, sustainable transport, climate resilience and sustainable forest solutions.

As of October 2022, the African Development Bank had 34 CIF projects approved for $ 2.939 billion (AfDB $1.993 billion, CIF $0.946 billion). The CIF's four programs are: Clean Technology Fund (CTF) Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program in Low Income Countries (SREP) Forest Investment Program (FIP) Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR).

To maximize the comparative advantages of CIF's proven business model in support of accelerated climate action in priority areas, the CIF Administrative Unit and partners developed four new strategic programs in areas seeking to drive the “rapid and far-reaching transitions in energy, land, urban and infrastructures, and industrial systems” called for by the international scientic community. The new strategic programs are the following:

  • Renewable Energy Integration,
  • Smart Cities,
  • Industry Decarbonization and Nature,
  • People, and Climate.
