Health Justice Collaborative

Our agenda is to identify and document the mechanisms through which racism and other structures of exclusion (e.g. misogyny, heteronormativity, transphobia, colonialism) shape health outcomes over the life course.

We generate evidence grounded in the experiences of oppressed peoples, and work with our community partners to conduct racial justice analysis of health and health-related policies and programs.

We recently had two webinars on inequities in COVID-19  vaccine rollout.

Surveillance through scripts, stories, and surveys

Our community health assessment efforts include measurement of racism and other social determinants of health, as well their impact on health outcomes (indicators of health status, access to health services, and relational aspects of health care delivery).

We collect and analyze data from cultural scripts, personal stories, and surveys.

In 2018, we launched  the Survey of the Health of Urban Residents, SHUR

SHUR data can help researchers and policymakers understand and address factors relevant to the health of racially and other marginalized populations. The survey is informed by the experiences of populations of color collected through focus groups. It includes indicators of stressors salient to these populations such as social exclusion, experiences of police brutality (and stressful anticipations of these experiences), housing-related stress, as well as stress related to arrests and incarceration.

Learn more about the SHUR here

Beginning in January 2021, SHUR data will be publicly available. Please complete this form to request access to the data.
