 Dean, College of Health and Human Services

Western Michigan University seeks an experienced and accomplished leader to serve as Dean of the College of Health and Human Services. The dean will have responsibility for leading a vision informed by equity, deliberative and shared governance, interdisciplinary strategic initiatives, and external funding priorities, while defining the College’s role in broader mission of the University. The dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for visionary, innovative leadership and effective administration of the college. The dean also serves on the Provost’s Council, which is involved with university-wide policy and planning issues.

The dean of the College of Health and Human Services advances the mission of the College and the University, along with advancing WMU’s Strategic Plan 2022-32. The dean oversees research, undergraduate and graduate education, enrollment management, academic and strategic planning, faculty and student development, grant and other external funding, collaboration with local, state or national agencies and institutions, and continuous quality improvement of the college’s programs and management. The dean works with faculty and staff to provide support for curricular improvement and achievement of a balanced vision for both undergraduate and graduate programs, including the provision of leadership with interdisciplinary collaboration. These activities include partnering with WMUx to offer innovative academic programming through online education and at regional locations to expand the scholarship and resources of Western Michigan University to learners and communities beyond Kalamazoo. The dean also provides fiscal oversight of the college within the WMU budget model and also will actively engage in fundraising and development activities to support the vision and mission of the college.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned terminal degree in a related field from an accredited U.S. institution or international equivalent

  • Record of successful qualifications that warrant rank of tenured full professor
  • Record of excellence in leadership, education, scholarship, and research
  • Demonstrated evidence of decision-making that aligns with professional ethics and university processes
  • Demonstrated outcomes in faculty and staff development, engagement and success
  • Demonstrated ability to form collaborative relationships with faculty in an atmosphere of transparency and shared governance
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement, success and sense of belonging
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity
  • Record of administrative experiences in a university or college setting or health-related equivalent, including management of budgets, personnel, and curriculum
  • Demonstrated ability to foster interdisciplinary, intercollegiate, and community partnerships and programs to advance college and university goals
  • Excellent analytical, written presentation, and interpersonal communication skills that are adaptable to a diverse range of audiences

  • Demonstrated record of research and scholarship

Dean, Merze Tate College

Western Michigan University seeks an experienced and accomplished leader to serve as Dean of the Merze Tate College. The dean will have responsibility for developing a collegial environment and will recognize the importance of student success, consensus building, partnerships, interdisciplinary collaboration, alumni relations, and external funding in defining the College’s role in the broader mission of the University. The dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and is responsible for visionary, innovative leadership, and effective administration of the College. The dean also serves on the Provost’s Council, which is engaged in university-wide policy and planning.

The Dean of the Merze Tate College advances the mission of the College and University. The dean is responsible for providing visionary leadership to advance the student success initiatives within Merze Tate College. Other essential responsibilities include development and assessment of student support programs, collaborating with staff and university faculty to develop and implement strategies for student recruitment, retention, and engagement; and serving as a visible and engaged advocate for the college. The dean will actively engage in fundraising and development activities to support the vision and mission of the College. The successful candidate will be positive, forward-thinking, creative, and committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Director, Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations

Western Michigan University invites applications for a fiscal year, faculty appointment as Director of the Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations. The Lewis Walkers Institute as an endowed institute is a campus and community leader committed to expanding understanding of the relationship of race and ethnic relations on all aspects of how we interact and engage across multiple academic and social contexts. The selected candidate will be eligible for hire at the rank of Associate or Full Professor within an academic college, with the opportunity for tenure upon appointment. This position will report to the Associate Provost for Equity-Centered Initiatives in Academic Affairs and will assume principal responsibility for directing the activities of the Lewis Walker Institute.

The director of the Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations actively facilitates individual or group collaborative research and professional development relationships between WMU faculty members and colleagues from other national and/or international academic institutions, fosters interdisciplinary research, either applied or translational, in collaboration with relevant national and/or international community-based organizations, agencies, and institutions, advances team-based internal and external funding proposal development, proposal submissions, and grant management to include relevant faculty members, has a research agenda with impactful national research projects, leveraging a strong background in research methodologies and a commitment to creating real-world change and impact, does program planning, implementation, and assessment, obtains external funding for research grants and demonstration projects, collaborates with the Advisory Council to advance the Walker Institute Mission, works with representatives of agencies, organizations and institutions in the Greater Kalamazoo community, hires, develops and reviews staff, manages a budget and other resource planning and management, manages fundraising and the development of pertinent external constituents, develops and executes a strategic plan on regular intervals, may be requested to teach up to two courses per year to support LWI curriculum and handles other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Ph.D., doctorate, or terminal degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experiences and expertise in effective leadership.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of best practices regarding team management and effective communication.
  • Demonstrated background in research and scholarship with experience in diverse research methods and relevant statistical analyses expertise.
  • An established track record in applying for and securing internal and external funding.
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural competence and global experience through either international research expertise and/or abroad practice experience (e.g., global research partnerships, international projects, etc.).
  • Demonstrated record of building and maintaining successful academic, community, governmental, non-governmental, and/or corporate partnerships.
  • Experience in being an active part of a diverse and inclusive group of faculty, staff, and student leaders, focused on advancing social, economic, racial, and environmental justice through practice, research and scholarship.
  • Evidence of prior publications in books, academic journals, and/or presentations at national and/or international conferences.
  • Professional experience in international or global settings (teaching, consulting, and/or research).
  • Interpersonal skills to be able to engage with WMU communities internally and externally
  • Eligible for tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor upon appointment.
