Mobile Food Truck Permit Request

Mobile food preparation vehicles (MFV) operating on State property shall comply with all Federal, State and Local laws, regulations and codes, including but not limited to licensing, inspection, and permitting requirements governing the operation of a food service business.


MFV shall comply with University Policies, including those related to environmental health and safety, vehicle use, parking, and sustainability.


MFV not registered within the Commonwealth of Virginia must obtain an operational permit from the Virginia State Fire Marshals Office prior to their arrival to campus.


With the exception of University MFV, each MFV must carry documentation of insurance as specified by the Office of Insurance and Risk Management.

Please provide a copy of your certificate of insurance in the supporting documents section.

Minimum insurance coverage required is:

Employer’s Liability - $100,000.

Commercial General Liability - $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 in the aggregate. Commercial General Liability is to include bodily injury and property damage.

Automobile Liability - $1,000,000 per occurrence.

Workers’ Compensation 

The Commonwealth of Virginia and William & Mary must be named as an additional insured and so endorsed on the policy. The certificate must be issued in advance of the date of the event and show the specific event and date. COI should be addressed to: PO Box 8795, Williamsburg VA 23187.  


MFV must employ the highest standards for neatness, cleanliness and sanitation.


The MFV will be onsite 1 hour prior to the event start time to allow the Fire Safety Office sufficient time to complete an inspection.


Vehicles and equipment must be free of leaking fluids. Any leaking equipment must be immediately removed from campus. The burden and cost of remediating any leak is the sole responsibility of the MFV owner/operator.


MFV may not refuel trucks or generators on university property.


MFV must comply with the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) . All MFV operating on the campus are subject to inspection by the University Fire Safety Officer or designee. MFV found not in compliance with the VSFPC may be asked to cease operations and/or may be asked to leave campus property until the identified deficiencies are corrected.


Requests for MFV inspections shall be submitted to the Fire Safety Office at least 7 business days prior to the event.
