GHC Statement on the Release of President Biden’s First Budget Proposal

April 09, 2021

Washington, D.C. (April 9, 2021) – The Biden Administration released a preview of its Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 budget proposal – the traditional first step in the budget process that will enable lawmakers to begin drafting their annual appropriations bills. The discretionary budget blueprint released today contains $63.5 billion for the international affairs budget. Global Health Council has been working with lawmakers in anticipation of today’s release and as expected, President Biden’s preview budget includes $10 billion for global health programs.

Today’s preview budget confirms the Biden-Harris Administration’s intention to position the United States as a leader on the global stage and we are encouraged by the commitment to support and strengthen our global health investments. “Today’s announcement is welcome news and, when combined with the recently passed COVID-19 supplemental, signals a strong shift in policy that recognizes the importance of investing in and building strong, equitable, and resilient health systems worldwide,” said John Ariale, Interim President & Executive Director of Global Health Council.

Global Health Council looks forward to the release of further details on the President’s budget–expected later this spring – on bilateral global health initiatives and pandemic preparedness funding. We stand ready to work with the Administration and Congress to increase funding for global health and international development programs that will help build stronger, more self-reliant communities through the annual appropriations process.
