KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Maynard Okereke Founder of Hip Hop Science

“Curiosity is Nature’s PhD: Empowering the Next Generation of STEM Leaders”

Maynard Okereke, better known as the Hip Hop MD, graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Civil Engineering. He is an award-winning Science Communicator, receiving the Asteroid Award for "Best Streaming Content" and the People of Change Award for his community outreach efforts. His passion for science and entertainment and his curiosity for innovations have taken him through an incredible life journey. Noticing a lack of minority involvement in the STEM fields, he created Hip Hop Science with the goal of encouraging minorities and youth to pursue more advanced career paths. THE STEMMY AWARDS

The Excellence in STEM Awards - The Stemmys was presented at the sySTEMnow Conference by emcee Darick Spears. The Stemmy Awards were established in 2005 to recognize educational institutions, businesses, organizations, and individuals who promote STEM awareness and improve the STEM competency of students. The four award categories are Education, Individual, Employer, and Partnership.

Congratulations to the 2023 Stemmy Award Winners:

stemmy award winner - education

Catholic Memorial High School (CMH) provides its students the unique opportunity to combine academics with experiential learning and project-based education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). CMH is a fully certified Project Lead the Way (PLTW) school. It is one of just three schools in Wisconsin to earn national recognition as a PLTW Distinguished School for six consecutive years for STEM curriculum and career readiness. CMH’s STEM curriculum elevates the student experience beyond the classroom and into the real world – providing a STEM curriculum that heightens critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills in hands-on project-based classes. CMH offers students the opportunity to expand their understanding of the STEM fields of study through three strands of the STEM curriculum: Biomedical Science, Computer Science, and Engineering. In addition to the impressive depth of courses offered, students can elevate their education during their senior year by participating in internships at local companies and organizations focused on growing their STEM skills.

stemmy award Winner - individual

Lalitha Murali is a gifted and talented teacher for the Glendale River-Hills School District. Sixteen years ago, when she started her job, she noticed only a handful of immigrant and minority children in the gifted programs. Lalitha believes that given the right resources and experiences, every child can reach their true potential. She began reaching out to the underrepresented groups in her school and her community through educational outreach programs and organizing workshops. Today, she has advanced-level solid programming for all her students with a high level of minority and immigrant participation. Lalitha was chosen as one of Wisconsin's top 20 Women of Influence Awardees for her educational leadership in 2017. She was also selected as one of the top 21 International Rotary Peace Fellows in 2019 and spent three months in Thailand. She is one of the 2023 Kohl's Fellows for her skill as a leader and agent for positive change and her superior ability to inspire a love of learning. Her commitment to advancing STEM education has earned her recognition as the 2023-24 Globant STEM Award Winner for the Inspiring Leader Category for the USA and Canada region.
