Mapping to the Display, Facets, and Search Sections in the Primo VE Record

    Last updated: March 14, 2024

    Return to menu

    Introduction

This topic describes how the system maps Dublin Core (DC) and MARC fields from the Alma source to the fields under the Display, Search, and Facets sections to the Primo VE normalized record so that it can be configured in the view and displayed in the UI. For information on how to display a record's normalized record, see Display PNX Record in Primo VE.

In addition, this article provides mapping information for the addata section and describes how the resource types for each supported format are mapped into Primo VE for display in the brief and full displays and in the facets.

For additional information, see Configuring Resource Types (5 min.).

    MARC Formats

The following details apply to all supported MARC formats (MARC21, UNIMARC, KORMARC, and CNMARC):

    • In ALL cases unless specified otherwise, MARC numeric subfields are not taken.
    • Unless noted otherwise, every occurrence of a MARC tag is added as a separate Primo VE display, facet, or search field value.
    • Indicators are added after a slash—for example for MARC21, the 245 indicator1=1 and indicator2=4 are specified as: 245/1/4. If no indicator is specified, any indicator value is valid.
    For MARC21 only:
The MARC 880 tag includes the field in the vernacular (for example, Chinese) and is added in addition to the other tags. The parallel MARC tag is in $$6 of the 880 field. In the mappings below, the $$6 is added after the 880 field. For example, 880-245 means that $$6 must be ‘245’. In subfield 6, indicators are added after a hyphen—for example, $$6245-14.
When mapping to the PRIMO VE display field, the system removes punctuation based on the following table:

    Resource Type Mapping

This section describes how Primo maps resource types from the source into Primo VE for the MARC21 and KORMARC formats. The MARC rules are applied in the order listed in the table below. The first MARC rule that matches the source record determines the Primo VE resource type. The notation for not equals is <>.

The default value for resource type is other if none of the following rules are met.

    databases

Not determined by the MARC metadata. Instead, during indexing, Alma assigns the databases resource type only to electronic collections or local databases when the local database or electronic collection is associated with a descriptive (bibliographic) record that is not suppressed, and a valid collection-level URL has been configured for linking to the database or collection in the Level URL field.

For more information, see the following sections in the Alma documentation:

    Display Section Mapping

The following table shows how MARC and KORMARC fields are mapped to the fields under the Display section in Primo VE.

Out-of-the-box, all the display fields do not display unless you configure them to display in the following areas of the UI:

    In addition:

Primo VE Display Field MARC21/KORMARC Tags

    Course Information

The course information (which includes the course code, course name, course department, and course instructor) is taken from the course information in Alma (not the MARC21 or KORMARC source records) and displayed as follows in Primo VE:

    <Course code + section>: <Course name>; <Course department>; <Course instructors>

For more details, see Configuring Course Reserves for Primo VE.

    Special formatting:

    • 260, 264:

      • Remove leading characters[

      • Remove characters from the end ]:,=/.

    • 008:

      • Take characters from position 07-10 (year 1) & 11-14 (year 2).

      • Add a “space-space” between year 1 and year 2.

      • Replace any character that is not a digit with a question mark.

      • Take a year if the result is all question marks or zeroes.

      Examples:

      • The following returns 1946:

    Facets Section Mapping

The following table shows how MARC fields are mapped to the fields under the Facets section in Primo VE.

Out-of-the-box, all the facets do not display unless you configure them to display on the Brief Results page. For configuration information, see Configuring Facets on the Brief Results Page.

For the MARC21 source format only, you can define normalization rules for local facet and search fields (see Adding a Local Field).

    PRIMO VE Facets MARC Tags

    Availability

This facet supports the following values:

    • Held by library – Displays content that you hold physically in the library. Note that consortia can define this to include physical records in other libraries.

    • Available Online – Displays content that is available online from external repositories or from electronic inventory (such as Alma-D or Alma-E). In addition, it includes CDI records for electronic collections to which your institution has full text access (which includes subscription and open access materials). For more details, see Activating Electronic Resources.

    • Open Access – Displays open access content for library-managed resources whose bibliographic records have the MARC 506 $f subfield set to Unrestricted online access and the 506 $2 subfield set to star. In addition, it displays CDI materials that are defined as open access.

    • Peer-Reviewed Journals – Displays peer-reviewed content for which their bibliographic records have the MARC 500 $a subfield set to Refereed/Peer-reviewed. In addition, it displays CDI materials that are defined as a part of a journal that has been peer reviewed.

    Collection

This facet is not mapped from the source records.

This facet is used when searching in CDI and includes only CDI collections. The collection facet values are populated from the relevant articles in the Central Index.

    Course Code + name

    Course Code

    Course Instructor

    Course Name

    Course Department

These facets are mapped from the course information in Alma (not the source records). Note that the Course code includes the course code and section, which uniquely identify the course in Alma.

For more details, see Configuring Course Reserves for Primo VE.

In blended searches with CDI, the author names displayed in the Author facet are determined by the institution's local content. Only author names that are present in the client's local material are represented. The Author facet's counts represent a combination of local results and CDI records. CDI is queried with the list of author names returned, and the facet counts are updated dynamically. Local and CDI records may be returned when the facet is requested.

    Search Section Mapping

The following table shows how MARC21 and KORMARC fields are mapped to the fields under the Search section in Primo VE.

Out-of-the-box, all fields are searchable at once for both basic and advanced searches, and the following fields are searchable individually for advanced searches only: Title, Author/Creator, Subject, ISSN, and User tags. If you want to allow other fields to be searched for basic and advanced searches, see Configuring Advanced Searches.

In addition to the mapping of the bibliographic metadata, Primo VE indexes the following information:

    • Authority Headings – MARC21 records are enriched with information from related Alma authority records (either local or Community Zone authority records) for the following bibliographic record authorization fields: 1XX, 600, 610, 611, 630, 648, 650, 651, 654, 655, 700, 710, 711, 730, 751, 752, 754, 800, 810, 811 or 830.

Specifically, the enrichment includes the preferred/nonpreferred terms from the 1XX/4XX fields when available in the related authority record. This especially enhances the Primo search capability of nonpreferred (4XX) terms so that, for example, searches for Mark Twain can be found by searching for Samuel Clemens.

To enhance the authority records with 5XX fields, see the index_5XX_authorithy_fields parameter in Discovery Customer Settings.

    • Course information – Primo VE indexs the course name, code, and instructor for records associated with course reading lists.

    • Shelf listing Holdings Call number

For the MARC21 source format only, you can define normalization rules for local facet and search fields (see Adding a Local Field).

Sort mapping of this field uses the set action in the normalization rules, which means that it processes the following bib fields and looks for a match, starting at the top. If it finds more than one match, it uses the last setting for the record.

    1. 264 c and ind 2 = 1
    2. 260 c
    3. 008 (6-7) does not equal e
    4. 008 (6-7) equal e

For example, if a record has a 260 c field and an 008 (6-7) equals e field, it uses the 008 field.

Addata Date, Volume, Issue, and Pages

Host enumerations (volume, issue, and pages) that are included in the MARC 773 $g subfield are included in the respective PNX fields (addata/volume, addata/issue, addata/spage and addata/epage, addata/tpages), and as a result, are displayed in citations with export actions.

To support this functionality, the MARC 773 $g subfield must be formatted as follows for local records.
    Where:

    • DD indicates 1 to 2 digit issues.

    • DDD indicates 1 to 3 digit pages or volumes.

    • DDDD indicates a 4-digit year.

The following Year, Volume, Issue information is extracted and included in the PNX addata/date, addata/volume, addata/issue, addata/startpage, addata/endpage and addata/tpages fields:

Format - $773 starts with: Description Example

    DDD(DDDD)DD

    <volume - minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 digits> (<Year in 4 digit format>) <issue - minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 digits>

An article published in 2005, volume 3 issue 1 should be included in the 773 $g as the following: 3(2005)1

    DDD(YYYY)

    <volume - minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 digits> (<Year in 4 digit format>)

An article published in 2005, volume 3 should be included in the 773 $g as the following: 3(2005)

Extract page information (start/end pages and total number of pages) to include in the PNX addata/spage, addata/epage, addata/tpages fields:

    Format – 773 $g includes: Description Example

    p.DDD-DDD or p. DDD-DDD

    p. <startpage in minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 digits>-<endpage in minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 digits>

An article published with start page 1 and end page 26 should be included in the 773 $g as the following: p. 1-26 or p.1-26

    pp.DDD or pp. DDD

pp.<total number of pages in in minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 digits>

A book published with total number of pages of 360 should be included in the 773 $g the following: pp.360 or pp.360

    then DDD becomes addata/tpages

    Resource Type Mapping

This section describes how Primo maps resource types from the source into Primo VE for the UNIMARC format.
The MARC rules are applied in the order listed in the table below. The first MARC rule that matches the source record determines the Primo VE resource type. The notation for not equals is <>.

The default value for resource type is other if none of the following rules are met.

    Search Section Mapping

The following table shows how UNIMARC fields are mapped to the fields under the Search section in Primo VE.

    • Authority Headings – UNIMARC records are enriched with information from related Alma authority records (either local or Community Zone authority records) for the following bibliographic record authorization fields: 410, 411, 416, 500, 600, 601, 602, 605, 606, 607, 616, 617 700, 701, 702, 703, 710, 711, 712, 713, 720, 721, 722, 723, 730, 740, 741, or 742.

    • Course information – Primo VE indexes the course name, code and instructor for records associated with course reading lists.

    • Shelf listing Holdings Call number

In addition, you can define normalization rules for local facet and search fields (see Adding a Local Field).
