GAINESVILLE, Fla. – True freshman
Elza Tomase was named to the 2022 Southeastern Conference All-Tournament Team following the completion of the tournament Sunday afternoon.
"It was a great tournament for Elza, very complete performances over all three days," associate head coach
Jarryd Chaplin said on the award. "Her maturation process has been great to watch. She is becoming more adept in uncomfortable situations and came through for her team in a big way this week."
Tomase was undefeated during the tournament, going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. The Latvia native won in straight sets in all three singles matches and delivered the doubles point clinch against Georgia, fighting through a back-and-forth tiebreaker with
Tenika McGiffin.
"Elza has come a long way since August when she arrived on campus," head coach
Alison Ojeda said. "She was already capable of playing very good tennis, what was missing was her ability to perform at a high level consistently. I love that she now trusts her coaches and teammates and is on the path that few are able to travel. She earned this spot and I am so very happy and proud of her for gaining this recognition."
She becomes only the second freshman to make the SEC All-Tournament team, joining
Brynn Boren who made the team in 2011. Tomase becomes the sixth Lady Vol to make the SEC All-Tournament team, and the second in the last two years, joining fellow countrywoman
Rebeka Mertena who was selected a season ago.
Currently, Tomase owns 29 wins in singles play, which ranks seventh in program history in freshman wins. She also holds 22 doubles wins which ties for 11
th in freshman history, joining head coach
Ojeda who posted 22 dubs victories in her first year on Rocky Top.
