– Face mask was identified as an important nonpharmaceutical intervention in halting the spread of Covid-19 across the globe. Health organizations issued advisories accordingly on the use of a face mask in public. To understand how Nigeria newspapers portray face masks in their news reports, a content analysis of four Nigerian newspapers was conducted from February 1, 2020, to September 30, 2020, to understand how face masks are framed in news reportage. News stories with face masks in the title and context of the study were descriptively analyzed. Findings revealed an under-reporting of face masks in Nigerian newspapers. Images were widely used in reporting face masks and pictures showing face masks or people wearing them made up about 50% of the total pictures used. The deductive analysis found 17 frames and five of the frames were prevalent, they include: advisory, punitive, production, donation, and crime frames. The study recommends that Nigerian newspapers include more informa...

The role of women in the reportage of military operations against the Boko Haram insurgents and their portrayal in news reports were investigated in this study. Radical Feminist Theory and Feminist Muted Group Theory were used to elucidate the research. Using content analysis, online editions of four Nigerian newspapers―Daily Trust, Premium Times, The Nation, and Vanguard―from January 2014 to December 2016 were investigated to reveal how women were presented in news reports. Findings produced 185 news stories; women were included in 10 % of the total pictures used. Women made up 8 % of the bylines and 4% of the sources, with 59 % of the women mentioned in the news presented as kidnap and rescued victims. The study found an underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women in news reports, which were attributed to the male-dominated journalism field that preferred using their male sources to the detriment of issues affecting women.En este estudio se investigó el papel de las mujeres...

One of the solutions advocated towards improving solid waste management is the use of biodegradables. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to analyze the images associated with reporting biodegradables in five daily Nigerian newspapers, The Cable, The Guardian, Leadership, Premium Times and The Punch from April 1, 2019 to August 30, 2019. The study drew its theoretical foundation on the theory of Multimodal Discourse Analysis using quantitative and qualitative content analysis. Findings revealed 12 articles with 10 containing images. Four themes were associated with the images; environmental pollution (5), plastic products (1), politicians/political (3), and logo theme (1). Embedded meanings were uncovered within the images. Recommendations include allocating more resources towards training of environmental reporters to increase the output and quality of reports about ...

This study is on Consumers’ Attitude towards Dano Milk Radio Advertisement. Dano milk is a new dairy brand in the Nigerian market from Arla Foods. The study objectives were to find out consumers’ rate of exposure to Dano milk radio ad and ascertain if the radio ad of Dano milk influences consumers’ choice of the brand. The research was confined to one theoretical framework, the Selective Processes Theory using descriptive survey research method. A sample of 400 respondents was drawn using multi-stage and quota sampling methods. The study found out that Dano milk advertisement is unknown to many respondents; the ad is aired in only few radio stations in the City; and there was no identified tagline in the ad. Recommendations include that there should be more radio ads possibly in all radio stations available in the City, if Arla Foods mean business in competing with rival brands. Framing theory is regarded by some scholars as the second dimension of the agenda setting theory. It is a quality of communication that leads others to accept one meaning over another because of how the issue is projected by the press in their coverage. In the field of communication, framing theory in recent years has taken over from the agenda-setting theory as the most commonly applied research approach (Bryant & Miron, 2004; Van Gorp, 2007). The main thrust of this paper appraises representations of the Nigerian military by the press reporting their engagements with the Boko Haram insurgent group. Some scholars have faulted news accounts about the Boko Haram conflict as being misrepresented by the media and only serve to inflame the already volatile conflict (Shehu, 2015; Hamid & Baba, 2014, 2014; Lawrence, 2011). Some have gone far to accuse news accounts of demoralizing troops fighting the insurgents in the past (Erunke, 2017; Haruna, 2017; Audu, 2013).

This inductive qualitative content analysis study analyzes the themes embedded in stories about biodegradable in five online Nigeria newspapers namely the Cable, the Guardian, Leadership, Premium Times and the Punch using discourse analysis. The aim of the study was to understand and uncover the themes used by journalists when reporting about biodegradables especially in relation to its adoption as one of the solutions to the problems associated with waste management and the environment generally. Agenda setting and framing theories served as the theoretical bedrocks that grounded the study. Data was collected over a five-month period between April 1, 2019 and August 30, 3019, with the consideration of June 5 each year celebrated as World Environment Day, data from two months prior and two months after can provide context into how newspapers reported about biodegradables within the backdrop of environmental coverage. Findings produced 12 news articles which aligned with the literatu...

This study investigates the attacks on Nigerian journalists during the first half of President Mohammadu Buhari’s civilian administration (2015-2017). Buhari had promised in his electioneering campaign to be a “converted democrat”, implying that the new democratic rule would not take after his dictatorship of 1983 to 1985 when he harassed and jailed reporters as a military head of state. In spite of his government’s recent press freedom claim, our findings show succinctly that no fewer than 38 newsmen and women were arrested or harassed and at least one killed by gunmen in the two-year period. Interestingly, none of the cases was linked directly to Buhari personally, unlike his term as a military dictator. Nevertheless, the cases of abuse recorded so far is an indication that his government should initiate actions that safeguard the social responsibility credential of journalists.

The role of twitter as one of the most popular social media application for organisations and political parties has been recognized by various scholars. Twitter has been used by parties as a means of sharing information and manifestoes, and also interacting with their followers online. The study was about how the Twitter followership of major political parties in Nigeria has changed since the 2015 elections. The major political parties for this study were the All Progressive Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. An internet research was carried out using the Twitter platforms for the APC and PDP. The research showed that for APC, their growth from 2014 to 2015 was “fairly significant” from 49 followers in 2014 to 244 followers in 2015, while the PDP recorded a “very significant” growth  from 5839 in 2014 to 79,516 in 2015. Even though the result showed that the APC recorded a growth on Twitter, they are significantly lagging behind on the follower count as their aggre...

Ethical considerations are important for journalists when reporting about the sexual abuse of children. The codes of ethics of society of professional journalists and Nigeria Press Council both recognize the need for ethics when reporting abuse stories due to the sensitive nature of the subject in relation to children and minors. This paper is hinged on the social responsibility theory of the press which states that granted the media may is free to publish especially in democracies, they must, however, exercise some restraint and responsibility in the type of information they make public. Using a qualitative content analysis, 10 newspaper articles were content analyzed, 5 each from Premium Times and Vanguard newspapers between September 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018 to ascertain their level of compliance with the ethics code. The study found out that although the newspapers did not disclose the names of abuse victims, it did however; include some information in some of the stories tha...

Nigerian military has been battling Boko Haram insurgents since 2009 with mixed successes amid claims that Nigerian troops were reluctant to engage the terrorists because the media framed the group as winning the battle, therefore, this study investigated the sources of news about military operations against Boko Haram. The theories supporting this research were the Agenda Setting and Framing Theory. Using content analysis of four Nigerian dailies; Daily Trust, Premium Times, The Nation & Vanguard, the research analysed sources of news about military operations against Boko Haram from 2014-2016. Findings revealed 185 stories with an average of 1.5 sources, most are identified by their full names, most stories are reported with sources from mainly one side of the divide without corroboration and the dominant sources were military sources. There was no factual basis supporting media bias against Nigerian newspapers, instead media reports were more in support of military positions.

Within the Nigerian front, the military has been mandated to engage the insurgents and bring them to submission. Opinions on the position of the media in helping the government to bring the conflict to a conclusion were divided as reports emerged that newspaper articles have caused low morale within the military during combat. This study employed content analysis on four Nigerian newspapers, Daily Trust, Premium Times, The Nation and Vanguard to investigate how military casualties were reported from 2014-2016. 5G was test-launched in Nigeria in 2019 to improve its communication technology, conspiracy theorists, however, linked 5G to the outbreak of the Covid-19. As with conspiracies, the ‘who’ that lends credence to it affects how far it travels. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Believers LoveWorld, added his voice to the 5G debate, claiming that Covid-19 lockdown was decoy to sequester the population for government to covertly deploy 5G. This study is important because it addresses the issue of fake news and its ability to cause civil disobedience in the society. Using secondary research method, content analysis was used to review arguments on 5G controversy in the Nigerian context. Findings revealed that government appealed for calm and stated that no license for the installation of 5G has been issued yet. Technology enthusiasts and media organizations put out fact-checking information in support of the technology. Various arguments indicate that no one really understands the full ca...

Social media especially Facebook and Twitter have given organizations and public figures an inexpensive platform of engaging with the public. Some organizations and public figures have adapted well to social media and others have not while another group looks at it indifferently. This study looks at the followership of the two main political parties (APC and PDP) in Nigeria on Facebook and Twitter after the 2015 general elections using content analysis, the uses and gratification theory of the media underpinned the study. An earlier study before the election in 2014 revealed that APC had 20,702 followers on Facebook and 49 followers on Twitter in, while PDP had 36,268 fans on Facebook and 5839 followers on twitter. Despite winning the general election and defeating the incumbent PDP, the APC still trailed the PDP on the social media where their Facebook and Twitter followers numbered 28,818 and 244 respectively compared to the defeated PDP's numbers which increased to 74,503 and 79,516 for Facebook and Twitter respectively. The result found this oddity where popularity on the social media does not equate to cast votes on election days. In the time after the data collection, both APC and PDP have gone on to announce the formation of new social media accounts in 2018 due to internal party disagreements.

Boko Haram group has become the foremost terrorist organisation in Nigeria and has ensured that terrorism is now a recurrent feature in news headlines in both national and international news organisations. The United Nations recently released a report that over 5 million displaced persons by the Boko Haram conflict risk starvation and death in 2017. Their area of operation has expanded from Nigeria into Cameroon, Niger and Chad across sub-Saharan Africa and rumoured to spread from Mali, Iraq and Syria with the pledge of allegiance by the Boko Haram Leader to the Islamic State (ISIS). This paper advocates that lack of viable community media organisations that provide information on rural communities may have played a part in the rise of the group. Journalists reporting conflicts are put in a complex situation where their access to conflict zones has been limited thus impacting on the quality of their reporting. The military is enjoined to provide greater access and protection for journalists covering the conflict as accuracy and objectivity are key elements in reporting and resolution of crises as the media are expected to make government accountable for policies and actions in a democratic dispensation.

Framing has been fundamental in how topical issues have been presented and dissected during discourse. In presenting the Boko Haram insurgency, the Nigerian press has been accused of misrepresenting the conflict by a number of studies. This was observed in the lopsidedness of reporting which have been influenced to a great extent by the government-press relationship. The media are seen as willing tools of the government in some instances by presenting government and military agenda in the course of reporting the conflict leading to a frame that point to a government victory when in reality it is far-fetched. In other instances, there is a dissonance between their points of view. This paper advocates for the synergy of thought between the military and media when reporting the conflict and for the press to focus more on the root causes of such conflicts rather than dwelling on the effects as the main function of the press should be tilted towards the resolution of the conflict not to serve as a tool of the government or an opposition by using sensational reporting to destabilize the society.

The study was carried out to determine the level of compliance with the ethical practices of masking the identity of child victims of sexual abuse by two Nigerian newspapers. Using content analysis, 10 newspaper articles were content analysed, 5 each from Premium Times and Vanguard newspapers between September 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018. Findings revealed that the two newspapers did not identify child victims of sexual assaults by their names as prescribed by the Nigerian Press Council. Premium Times, however, provided less supplementary information that could identify children who were victims of sexual abuse, compared to Vanguard newspaper. The result also showed that the two newspapers did not include information that identifies the relevant government agencies and NGOs involved in providing support for child abuse victims and their families. The study recommended strengthening of regulatory organisations to provide a better framework to guide the ethics of the journalism profession in Nigeria and also the need to include information that identifies the relevant government agencies and NGOs involved in providing support for sexual abuse victims and their families.

The agenda setting theory of the press has been dealt with on numerous occasions in scholarship about communication
studies and press theories. In examining press reports about military operations against the Boko Haram group underpinned
by the agenda setting theory of the press, this paper explores the realities from press expositions about occurrences in North
East Nigeria. An independent press reduces the likelihood of bias in reporting while the chance of accuracy and objectivity
increases. To increase the chances of this happening, the press needs more access to the conflict zone. Between the actors in
any conflict, there is a symbiotic relationship, for the media to act as validators of actions ascribed to them, either as
liberators/terrorists on one hand or freedom fighters/oppressor on the other hand. The military are viewed as the liberators
while the Boko Haram insurgents are the terrorists while on the other paradigm, Boko Haram view themselves as freedom
fighters and the Nigerian government/military as the oppressors. The agenda that redeems the media is that of accuracy
with little room for bias when reporting news stories. Ensuring that as many sources from all the sides are involved before
publishing is essential, otherwise, it borders on bias or even the extreme falsehood that today can be aided by technology that
spreads within seconds globally.

This paper analyses the use of pictures in reporting military operations against Boko Haram in four Nigerian newspapers: Daily Trust, Premium Times, The Nation and Vanguard from 2014-2016. It was borne out of the claim that past reporting were biased against military making better equipped soldiers run from battle when faced with the insurgents. The study was grounded on the Framing theory using content analysis. Findings showed pictures were extensively used in reports with the majority being about the military and its successes which is contrary to the claim of bias against the media. However, most of the pictures were not relevant, poorly or not captioned at all without source credit. The study recommends that Nigerian newspapers covering military operations against Boko Haram should use pictures that are relevant to what is being reported, using captions and attribution for each picture used.

The result of this study can be translated to mean that Facebook has little or no impact in the election results in Nigeria. Political parties thus may use it to promote their candidates and their policies with the educated electorate and international organisations in mind.

The research showed that for APC, their growth from 2014 to 2015 was " fairly significant " from 49 followers in 2014 to 244 followers in 2015, while the PDP recorded a " very significant " growth from 5839 in 2014 to 79,516 in 2015. Even though the result showed that the APC recorded a growth on Twitter, they are significantly lagging behind on the follower count as their aggregate Twitter followers are less than the number of voters that make up a polling unit in Nigeria. The surprising fact here is that APC defeated the PDP in the Nigerian presidential election of 2015 by over 3 million votes, yet is trailing the PDP on Twitter, we then have to ask if Nigerian voters have apathy for Twitter? It is recommended that further studies be carried out to ascertain what motivates political parties in Nigeria to use Twitter if as this research has shown there is no correlation between Twitter use and earned votes.

It is believed that the government and all stakeholders will pull resources together so that media relations practice in Nigeria will improve significantly and hopefully in the not too distant future be at par with what is obtainable in developed countries.

This paper analyzes and discusses the observed influence of the new media theory with regard to political parties in Nigeria. This influence stems from characteristics of new media that allows individuals and groups to share knowledge, experiences, opinions, and ideas within and outside their group and in a McLuhan's sense of " global village " , where such information are consumed by a global audience. The new media theory looks at features that make the new media ideal and fashionable as an instantaneous political communication tool that encourages a two-way communication using either top-bottom or bottom-top approach. This is a radical departure from the traditional print and television media that are not instantaneous and have a delayed feedback. The new media in all cases incorporates elements from the older media for its content. The print media fed from the oral media, radio from both print and oral media, Television incorporated elements of all three and the internet feeds from all the previous media. The print, radio and television were once the new media of their times, the internet and its applications are the new media of our time and in the future another media will feed from the internet to be the new media of the future time.
