#OTD The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was signed on May 6, 1882, and was one of the first pieces of legislation passed by the U.S. government to legally discriminate against the Chinese people by blocking Chinese workers from coming to the country and Chinese immigrants from becoming citizens. It restricted free immigration for only one group of people. While overturned, the impact of the Act still lingers in modern times in calls for bans on other types of immigration based on religion or country of origin.
