Under the leadership of Director of Athletics Brian D. Mann, William & Mary Athletics Department is achieving much-needed momentum as it works to achieve financial stability in an environment that is focused on the maximum development of its 500 student-athletes. Currently, the Tribe competes in 23 sports in the Colonial Athletic Association.
With its long and proud history of competitive excellence in Division I of the NCAA, W&M is an outstanding example of how intercollegiate athletics can complement a premier academic institution, yet there is a significant cost associated with operating a strong, competitive and financially sustainable program.
Since October of 2020, W&M has been examining every facet of the Athletics Department’s finances, reviewing revenues and expenses while at the same time projecting the resources necessary to be financially stable years into the future. Simultaneously, the department is reviewing gender equity to ensure compliance with Title IX and the university’s values of belonging and respect. The department has also made significant reductions to its operating expenses.
William & Mary is committed to Division I athletics, and it is critical for our alumni, friends and fans to demonstrate significant, ongoing financial support for student-athletes and sport programs. As its review of the department’s operations progresses, the university and athletics leadership will continue to engage with our various communities to both inform and seek guidance on the best future for the Tribe.
