Coinbase Breach Class Action Lawsuit Overview

  • Who: A Texas man is suing Coinbase, the cryptocurrency trading platform.
  • Why: The man alleges his Coinbase account was breached to make a $50,000 unauthorized transaction. He says at least 1,000 other Coinbase accounts have also been breached.
  • Where: The plaintiff is looking to represent Coinbase users nationwide.

A Texas man says Coinbase violated the law by allowing a breach of his cryptocurrency account that led to a $50,000 unauthorized purchase made with his money, according to a new class action lawsuit.

Lead plaintiff Adam Alfia filed the class action against Coinbase Global, Inc. on Nov. 8 in a California federal court, alleging breach of contract, negligence, and fraud.

Alfia says he formerly used Coinbase as a way to buy, sell and manage his cryptocurrency.

However, on July 19 this year, Alfia says he logged into his Coinbase account to find that $50,000 in Ethereum had been purchased. Alfia says he did not make this purchase.

The same day, the plaintiff says he logged into his Bank of America account to see if the money had come out. It had. “This caused Mr. Alfia great stress and worry,” the lawsuit states.

Alfia lodged a complaint with Coinbase explaining what had happened. He says Coinbase responded by locking him out of his account for two months.

1K Coinbase Accounts — Or More — Breached Due To Lax Security, Claims Class Action Lawsuit

Alfia believes that at least 1,000 have been harmed by Coinbase not properly securing its accounts from breaches.

He’s looking to represent anyone in the United States who had a Coinbase account that was breached in the last four years.

Alfia is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs, and a jury trial.

Coinbase is facing mounting litigation alleging its lax security measures have left account holders locked out and victims of theft. A pair of cryptocurrency users filed a class action lawsuit in August saying their Coinbase wallets were either hacked or frozen without warning and their pleas to release their accounts so they could access funds went unheeded by the company.

Earlier in the year, another class action lodged in California claimed that Coinbase randomly locked users out of their accounts for months at a time causing them to lose funds, and even erased accounts in their entirety

The plaintiff is represented by Evan Selik and Christine Zaouk of MaCathern LLP.

  1. Eric Grund says:

I’m not alleging Jack!!! I have All of the screenshots and proof that coinbase, don’t think directly, but the subcontractors that work for them, have taken 2,254$ from me. Thankfully, I had had a 50$ attack and began slowly dwindling what was at coinbase and got 95% of the funds that were there, before they did. The word needs spread and Coinbase to get what Scam Bankless Fraud ended up with. They will not stay in business with this ethic. Thank you for listening.

  2. Raul M says:

  3. Myles Rhonda says:

I financed a car that had a nationwide murder warrant attached to the vin and it caused me to get pulled over at gun point 5 times a week for 7 months so I did a voluntary repo about two years ago. I needed to get it removed and Pentiumtechservices @bk. ru came highly recommended and I recommend them for all credit related help.

  4. Alvaro Alonso Gomez says:

I got hit for $15,000. I didnt even know because my coinbase account was locked. It wasnt till I try to unstake my ETH that coinbase finally told me that my account is -$13,000.

  5. Daniel says:

    Add me please.

  6. Wendy says:

My account was hacked and I lost $5000. My account shows $200 now but coinbase is taking no responsibility and closed my complaint. Tried to call, no answers. This must be illegal or at the very least, extremely unethical. Their lack of security and their apathy towards hacks and hack victims made them a prime target for cybercriminals.

  7. Paul B says:

2 days ago someone hacked into my Coinbase account and made 700$ in
ethereum disappear. Customer service was useless, phone call quality was horrible, I think I spoke to someone in India, and they locked my account.
How can I join on this class action lawsuit?

I got hacked 2 days ago for $7000 and I called Coinbase. They said, “they can’t get me my money back”. I’m so upset with their customer service and security protection!!

  9. Rosa says:

Me hackearon la cuenta de Coinbase y me locked

  10. Joy Meserve says:

Getting to the bottom of this now… but it looks like they’ve been withdrawing $50/month on my account since Nov 2021 and now have taken $500 in total. I know it’s not a lot compared to other people, but it’s so creepy when it’s linked to your bank account! Coinbase is “not seeing these transactions” on their end.
