The University of Rochester has named Kevin Garewal the next vice provost and Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly Dean of Libraries, effective February 14, 2022.

Currently Garewal is associate director of collections at Harvard Law School Library, where he has been heavily involved in diversifying the collection and in leading a Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Anti-racism plan to assess, diversify, and collect material and increase traditional digital access to these items. As part of this work, he has played a key role in garnering donor support to digitize content from underrepresented communities.

Garewal has extensive collection development experience in university, public, and special libraries, and he often delivers presentations on collection development, monograph acquisition, and researchers’ needs. He holds a master’s degree in library and information science from Kent State University, and a JD and master’s degree in accounting from Cleveland State University.

At the University of Rochester, Garewal will succeed Mary Ann Mavrinac, who will retire January 7, 2022, after leading the University of Rochester Libraries since 2012. Lauren Di Monte, associate dean for learning, research, and digital strategies, will serve as interim vice provost and Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly Dean of Libraries from January 8 through February 13, 2022.
