Tips for moisture control and preventing mold

The following message was shared with OHIO's residential students on Sept. 23:

When it comes to mold and mildew, prevention is key. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that molds are found in virtually every environment, and they can thrive in warm, humid places, including our residence halls and University buildings.

Moisture control, air circulation and good housekeeping practices are essential to controlling its growth.

Tips for preventing mold and mildew growth:

  • Report any water issues/leaks immediately by contacting Facilities Management and Safety (740-593-2911).
  • Set your air conditioning thermostat between 74 and 76 degrees.
  • Run the fan on auto/continuous to reduce condensation and to maintain proper airflow.
  • Do not open windows during cooling or heating season.
  • Keep room air vents (where applicable) in all areas open and unobstructed to maintain proper airflow.
  • Do not hang towels (or any other wet items) to dry between the mattress and bed frame.
  • Practice good housekeeping by vacuuming floors, wiping down counters, cleaning up spills quickly, washing out refrigerators, wiping down doors, etc. on a regular basis.

Think there might be mold in your room?
We’re here to help (and fast). Contact Facilities Management and Safety (FMS) at 740-593-2911. They’re available 24/7 and can quickly respond to your needs the same day (and no later than 24 hours).

While FMS is on-site, they will:

  • Assess the entire area for mold.
  • Clean any impacted areas with a mold-cleaning solution.
  • Replace your air conditioner if mold is suspected within the current unit.
  • If needed, FMS will also provide you with a dehumidifier to help alleviate any ongoing moisture concerns.
