The offices of the Provost and the Vice Provost for Student Success invite applications for the Haslam Scholars Faculty Fellows program. The Haslam Scholars Faculty Fellows Program is an exciting initiative that seeks to connect UT‘s most academically talented honors students, the Haslam Scholars, with top UT faculty. This initiative is supported by generous funding from a donor to promote innovative teaching and learning practices. All UT faculty are invited to apply, and prioritization will be given to those with scholarly work in leadership.
About the Haslam Scholars Program
- The program is designed to provide transformational learning experiences that help Haslam Scholars understand and develop their academic and leadership potential—with the ultimate goal of cultivating Tennessee’s leaders of tomorrow.
- Through the Haslam Leadership curriculum, Haslam Scholars will learn to pursue opportunities that positively improve their personal and professional spaces.
- Haslam Scholars will complete a cohort study abroad (the mini-term following the first year), a guaranteed 12-week paid internship at a Tennessee-based organization, and complete a cohort capstone project solving a problem in Tennessee (e.g., education, transportation, job creation, economic).
- Haslam scholars develop year-long research or creative activities projects to finalize their independent capstone or thesis.
- Each year, Haslam Scholars also complete 25 hours of community service and attend the Haslam Leadership Speaker Series.
- Haslam Scholars receive a financial package that covers tuition, fees, and room and board in the Dogwood residence hall.
About the Haslam Scholars Faculty Fellowship
We are interested in hiring two Haslam Scholars Faculty Fellows who will be prepared to teach leadership courses within the Haslam Scholars curriculum.
Haslam Scholars will utilize transformative learning experiences to become Tennessee’s emerging and innovative future leaders. Through the Haslam Leadership curriculum, Haslam Scholars will learn to pursue opportunities that positively improve their personal and professional spaces. Curriculum includes:
- Foundations of Leadership
- Inclusive Engagement: Universal Leadership
- Dynamic Leadership: Leading Change
- Conflict Resolution: Effective Communication
- Education Abroad: Global Leadership (zero-credit-hour Spring Professional Development Series & Summer Education Abroad)
- Capstone: Putting it All Together
- Haslam Professional Development Series: Challenges of Tennessee (i.e., education, economic, housing, food insecurity, agriculture)
We are seeking two dynamic faculty to begin their two-year term beginning in spring 2023 (academic years 2022-2023; 2023-2024). Successful applicants will develop new classes within the Haslam Scholars curricular framework outlined above and new formats for course delivery in the Haslam Scholars Program while helping our exceptional undergraduates explore leadership from the perspective of many academic disciplines. Faculty interested in exploring innovative research and experiential learning opportunities that foster cross-disciplinary engagement are especially encouraged to apply. This program aims to make the Haslam Scholars a true incubator for pedagogical innovation with the potential to benefit the campus.
During the two years of the fellowship, the teaching load of a Haslam Scholars Faculty Fellow will be apportioned thus:
- Teach one Haslam Scholars Seminar during fall, spring, or summer per year.
- Meet and recruit prospective Haslam Scholars and actively participate in the Haslam Scholars Selection Weekend.
- Meet monthly with the Honors & Scholars Programs faculty director to review Haslam Scholars’ progress and share curriculum innovations.
- Provide oversight of one additional Haslam Scholar project per year (i.e. education abroad, internship program, capstone project, or professional development series).
- One (1) non-Honors course per academic year bought out at a rate not to exceed $6,000 per course.
In addition to the course release, Honors & Scholars Programs will fund a $10,000 stipend per academic year. The Haslam Faculty Fellows have access to a shared $10,000 annual fund to support innovative course development. These funds may assist with course development, support teaching innovations, and defray course-related expenses (such as team-teaching remuneration, costs related to research activities, or fees for guest speakers).
The two faculty members selected to serve as a Haslam Scholars Faculty Fellow will be appointed by the vice provost for Student Success in consultation with the associate vice provost and executive director of Honors & Scholars Programs and director of the Honors & Scholars Programs.
A successful Haslam Scholars Faculty Fellow must be nominated by their academic dean and excel in undergraduate teaching. Their academic discipline and research must directly align with the Haslam Scholars’ leadership curriculum. All faculty are welcome to apply, but we will prioritize faculty from the following academic units at the request of the donor:
- Haslam College of Business
- Tickle College of Engineering
- Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education & Communications
- Department of Retail, Hospitality, & Tourism Management
- Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies
Successful applicants will have one (1) non-Honors course per academic year bought out at a rate not to exceed $6,000 per course and be nominated by their college dean to be considered.
