The Wildlife Rehabilitation Grant Program is offered by Colorado Parks and Wildlife to support wildlife rehabilitation efforts across the state.  

  • Grants are for a minimum of $1,000 and do not require match         
  • The application deadline is December 5, 2023

Applicant and Activity Eligibility

Total funding estimated to be available for 2023 will be announced soon. 

  • Applicants must be a wildlife rehabilitator currently licensed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
  • Grant funds can only be used for species authorized under the applicable wildlife rehabilitation license. 
  • Per the authorizing statute, the minimum grant award is $1,000

​​Eligible Activit​ies​

​Ineligible Activities

  • ​Food for species rehabilitated at the facility
  • Upgrade or repair of facility infrastructure
  • ​Facility operation and maintenance
  • ​Upgraded, expanded, or new rehabilitation structures (e.g. enclosures, flight cages) at existing licensed facilities
  • ​​​Veterinary or medical expenses
  • Training for facility staff or volunteers
  • Public education and outreach on animal rehabilitation, and​ resolving human-wildlife conflicts
  • Staff salaries
  • ​Non-releasable animal support or housing (e.g. sanctuary)
  • ​Lobbying
  • Activities related to species not authorized under the applicable wildlife rehabilitation license, except for sparrows, starlings and collared doves​
  • Out of state travel or conferences​


Funding Considerations

Board members may consider the following factors when assessing grant applications:   

  • Type and number of species rehabilitated annually
  • Preference for funding existing facilities vs. a newly created facility
  • Good track record of rehabilitation
  • Fills a local/regional need
  • Ability to complete planned project
  • Geographic distribution of funding
  • Cost-effectiveness​
​Other considerations:
  • Matching funds are NOT required
  • Partial funding may be awarded

Grant Recipient Requirements

The following lists responsibilities that are required of grant recipients:   

  • Financial records for grant funds must be submitted at the time of reimbursement
  • Reimbursable expenses may only be incurred during the grant period (i.e., work completed prior to grant award and contract set-up is not eligible for reimbursement)
  • Quarterly and final reports are required
  • Grant funds must be used in a timely manner in accordance with the approved application
  • Appropriate state and federal permits to work on species at the facility must be maintained
  • On-site inspection of the completed project, or of the facility, may be required
