It’s Still About Writing! From Heritage Language Research to Critical Tasks

Online lecture by Dr. Julio Torres (University of California - Irvine)

Tuesday, March 8, 2022 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM EST
Online Location, Advance registration required (see event description for link)

Since the origins of the heritage language (HL) education field, HL learners have expressed needing the most support with their writing skills in the HL. In the first part of this talk Dr. Julio Torres reviews key issues pertaining to HL writing as well as a summary of collaborative and individual HL writing studies, including an ongoing study on HL learners’ individual writing behavior in the HL (Spanish) and in the societal language (English). The second part of the talk, following a task-based language teaching framework, showcases examples of online task-based lessons created for a university heritage Spanish course. Examples include tasks that promote a written register in the HL as well as an example that promotes HL learners’ critical language awareness.

Advance registration is required.
