Tragic Prelude Mural at the Kansas State Capitol Building

Grades 6-12
Art, Social Studies

Tragic Prelude, featured on the second floor of the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka, is considered one of John Steuart Curry’s best murals. However, the painting’s rich symbolism was so heavily criticized throughout the 1930s and 1940s that Curry left without completing the murals planned for the rotunda. He even refused to sign the two murals he completed.

Take your class on a tour with Capitol Visitor Center Coordinator Joe Brentano, as he explores the history behind the mural and the symbolism depicted in it.

Beneath Monroe School: What Archaeology Can Teach us About the Buried Past at Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site

Grades 4-12
Careers, Social Studies

Buried beneath the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site is a history predating the 1954 Supreme Court case from which it gets its name, which ended legal segregation of schools in the United States. Monroe Elementary School (built 1927) currently stands on the property, but buried beneath the ground is the former location of the first Monroe School (built 1874) and several houses. Early maps are vital to understanding the history of the property, but archeology can help us expand this story, increasing our knowledge of the early life of the property and the people that lived and learned there.

That woman was Susanna Salter―and soon the men would find the joke was on them! Narrated by a grandmother who remembered what happened on that election day, this is the true story of a woman who stood up for her right to vote and accomplished so much more.
