5 The woman asserts her beauty in spite of the fact that she has been exposed to the darkening rays of the sun. In verse 6, she claims that the sun has made her “swarthy” (šəḥarḥōret), which is often taken as a diminutive of “black” (šāḥôr). 2 In verse 5a there has been much discussion over the relationship between the darkness of her complexion and her beauty. In a nutshell, should we translate the waw as a conjunctive “and” or a disjunctive “but”? The context is actually quite clear.
