Medical Symposium: What Physicians Need to Know
Tick-Borne Diseases

Presented by the Regional Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital

Thursday, May 19, 2022
8:15 am – 4:30 pm
Stony Brook University Southampton Campus
Avram Theater
39 Tuckahoe Road, Southampton, NY

This symposium offers participants a comprehensive overview and understanding of the areas that are critical to appropriate diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne disease. Participants will learn what goes into generating evidence-based data to inform clinical decisions.

The target audience consists of physicians, medical residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, laboratory technicians and all other interested medical professionals. This symposium is free and includes breakfast and lunch.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the interrelatedness of ticks and tick-borne pathogens from the discovery of Borrelia burgdorferi in the 1970s to the increases in babesiosis and anaplasmosis, and the invasion of the lone star tick which carries the agent of ehrlichiosis.
  • Learn about the presentation of tick-borne illnesses in the Emergency Department, and evidence-based recommendations for accurate diagnosis, testing and treatment.
  • Understand the epidemiology of babesiosis in Suffolk County, the clinical presentations, the interpretation of laboratory diagnostic tests, and the presence of this parasite in vector ticks as contributors to polymicrobial infections.
  • Understand the history of the development of laboratory tests for tick-borne diseases and how tests are evolving to improve laboratory diagnosis.
  • Learn the history and what is known about STARI (Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness), how to recognize the clinical features, and why it is important to understand this illness.
  • Learn about the delayed symptoms induced by a novel food allergy to mammalian meat caused by the lone star tick, and an understanding of the diagnostic processes and limitations to Alpha-gal IgE testing.
  • Learn about the development of TBVs (B. burgdorferi transmission-blocking vaccines) and how this approach to immunizing vertebrate hosts produces antibodies that kill B. burgdorferi within feeding ticks.
