Dr. Tom Frieden is a national and global public health leader who has improved health in the United States and around the world and is one of the world’s top experts in tuberculosis, tobacco control, and health policy and administration.

Dr. Tom Frieden served as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Commissioner of the New York City Health Department. His work made New York City’s tuberculosis control program and overall health department models for the world, established effective programs in India, and improved morale, effectiveness, and impact at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the 2020 outbreak of novel coronavirus from China, Frieden emphasized the need to learn more about the pathogen, summarized scientific articles as they appeared, and called for more investment in global preparedness.

Dr. Tom Frieden sounded the alarm on the novel coronavirus in January 2020, and was one of the first to declare a global pandemic. He has used his and his initiative’s expertise and presence to help government leaders, organizations, policymakers, media and the public better understand and respond effectively to the pandemic. His team provides expert advice, technical assistance, and practical resources to more than 60 countries, and is on the ground responding to the pandemic, including in the United States. Globally, his initiative is leading effective, data-driven approaches to reduce spread, save lives, and restart economic activity as safely and soon as possible.
