Aarhus School of Architecture

The Aarhus School of Architecture is an institution of higher education under the Danish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education, which has as its objective to offer, on an artistic and scientific level, education in architecture until the highest level, to practice artistic innovation work, and, on a scientific basis, to carry out research within the field of architecture. We carry out research and teaching on all levels of scale of the architectural profession — from design and architecture to urbanism, urban landscapes and physical planning. Regardless of the area of study, we always emphasize the core competences of the architect, the artistic approach to assignments and the ability to work spatially as well as visually. In our workshops scholars, teachers and students produce models and prototypes, often in full-scale. The School’s vision is “Engaging through Architecture,” which means that we focus on educating architects who are aware of the responsibilities they have as designers of our future material and immaterial surroundings and who are able to engage actively and critically with society. The School’s focus areas for the coming years will be Habitation, Transformation and Sustainability. We also focus on Research by Design and on developing new teaching methods (didactics).

The Bartlett, University College London

The Bartlett is UCL’s global faculty of the built environment. Our work is all about human spaces. Yes, that means physical structures like homes, building and cities. But also the invisible structures that govern these things: political and legal systems. Financial frameworks and social norms. Even our understanding of the past, present and future. Combining design, history, and theory across all of these areas, we understand the structures shaping society today – and we work to make them fairer and more prosperous.

That’s why we can design buildings for places battered by fierce weather systems. It’s why we can develop emergency shelters for populations shattered by war. We can show that global shipping has a higher carbon footprint than the whole of Brazil, and develop remote technologies that allow a surgeon in the UK country to operate on a patient in the US. We can show why government agencies can be just as entrepreneurial as Silicon Valley, and we can shape the policies that make this happen.

None of this is possible without shared wisdom. With architecture and planning alongside disciplines such as energy, sustainability, public purpose and prosperity, our 13 parts are able to share perspectives in a way unlike any other faculty at any other university. The Bartlett includes the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, the School of Architecture, the School of Construction and Project Management, the Development Planning Unit, the School of Planning, the Real Estate Institute, the School of Environment, Energy, and Resources, including the UCL Energy Institute, the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, the Institute for Sustainable Heritage, and the Institute for Sustainable Resources, the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity, and the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose.

And being in London, with all its history and resource, we’re proud to partner with leading institutions from industry, government and beyond. Through generous conversations, enduring collaboration, and true diversity across our students and staff, we’ll overturn failing systems and build new ones that allow people to live their best lives.

Although our work is about the shape and structure of human environments, our ambition is boundless – and the possibilities are endless.

Morgan State University School of Architecture and Planning

The School of Architecture & Planning at Morgan State University — a Historically Black College/University — is a professionally-based academic unit committed to the exploration of human and natural environments. The School’s graduate and undergraduate degree programs introduce and promote the sense of interconnectedness between built form, human behavior, forces of nature, and the political and economic dynamics characteristic of an urban context.

The School’s oldest graduate programs (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, City & Regional Planning) prepare students to address the challenges associated with systems of the built environment and their integration with natural systems. The objective is to link domains of environmental (natural patterns and flows), economic (financial patterns and equity), and social (human, cultural, and spiritual) as related to the practices of planning, design, and management. This leads to the realization of a sustainable urban environment that is beautiful, humane, socially appropriate, and restorative.

The undergraduate program in Architecture & Environmental Design is an important component of the SA+P family. The four-year pre-professional Bachelor of Science is structured to integrate elements of the built and natural environment with the ability to respond meaningfully the changing needs of urban society patterned by a wide cultural influence. The program promotes critical thinking so that each student can visualize, discuss, and represent a detailed conceptualization, application, investigation, synthesis, and evaluation of the connections between each concept. Students are taught to accept responsibility for their role in creating environments and communicate ethical practices that lead to informed decision making.

SA+P students become knowledgeable about planning, design, and management as predictive decision-making processes by the examination of human factors involved in the necessarily collaborative activity of environmental intervention and preservation. The aim of the SA+P is to graduate competent and dedicated professionals.

School of Architecture + Planning, University of New Mexico

The University of New Mexico was founded by an act of the Territorial Legislature in 1889. In 1936, the first architectural concentration was established with the College of Fine Arts, and in 1956, a five-year architectural program was established in the Division of Architecture, responsible to both the College of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts. The degree evolved into a 4+2 program in 1969. In 1968, the Community + Regional Planning program was established, growing out of the research initiatives of the faculty. The Landscape Architecture Department was later established in 2000. In 2017, the three academic programs were converted to Departments, led by Chairs. The School of Architecture + Planning is the only university to confer professional, accredited degrees in the three disciplines in the state of New Mexico. SA+P also offers graduate certificates in Historic Preservation and Urban Innovation.

In 2008, the SA+P moved into a new building, designed by world renowned New Mexican architect, Antoine Predock, who won the competition to design the building. The new building was named George Pearl Hall in honor of local architect George Clayton Pearl. Dean Robert Alexander González serves as the School’s seventh Dean, following the interim deanship of Mark Childs (2019-2020) and Dean Geraldine Forbes Isais (2010-2019).

University of Toronto, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design

The fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design are characterized today by exceptional pressure for change. Globalization and the convergence of new media, materials, and building technologies have led to radical change in economic, technical, and aesthetic formations in the design fields. The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design is responding to these shifts. As the largest city in Canada and one of the most dynamic in North America, Toronto is a thriving metropolis, providing exceptional resources for the aspiring architect, landscape architect, or urban designer to study the early twenty-first-century human condition. Daniels has a global orientation in its teaching and research while simultaneously believing in the importance of sensitively addressing local forces. In this context, Daniels strives to harness the potential of Toronto’s distinctive multi-ethnic and multicultural society. The greater Toronto region serves as a dynamic laboratory for critical studies and the imaginative exploration of design alternatives that will be of consequence internationally. Students not only have the city to use as a resource, but also have access to Toronto’s large professional design community, many of whom teach at the school. In addition, the city’s multicultural networks and international connections make Daniels a powerful place to start a career. Daniels’ focus on interdisciplinary training and research will test your limits and challenge you to rethink design for the 21st century.
