PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — Eugene Vindman, a Democrat running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 7th District, raised $2 million in the last six weeks of 2023, his campaign announced.

Vindman is part of a crowded race for the seat currently held by Abigail Spanberger. Spanberger is not running for reelection in 2024 as she plans to run for governor in 2025.

The 7th district includes eastern Prince William County, Stafford County, the City of Fredericksburg, King George County, and Orange County.

Vindman was a colonel in the United States Army who also served on the White House National Security Council as the senior ethics attorney. Vindman notified White House lawyers after President Donald Trump attempted to block military aid to Ukraine unless officials investigated Joe Biden. Vindman's report led to Trump's impeachment in 2019.

"We live in a dangerous world that requires a steady and experienced hand on day 1. For 25 years, I served my country in uniform, defending the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic," Vindman said in a news release. "I fought for accountability as a prosecutor and against impunity when Trump broke the law. Trump’s retaliation cost me my military career. Now my mission is to take on Trump’s MAGA cronies, to preserve our Democracy, restore trust in government, and fight for Virginia voters."

Vindman's campaign said the more than $2 million in campaign funds came from more than 70,000 individual contributors. The average contribution measured less than $29. Approximately 98 percent of donors gave less than $100, the campaign said.

"The grassroots support my campaign has received has been humbling," Vindman said. "I am inspired by the everyday hard-working Americans that have put their faith in me to restore confidence in our government."

Vindman is immersed in a race that includes fellow Democrats Margaret Franklin and Delegate Brianna Sewell. Republicans Bill Moher, Jon Meyers, and Cameron Hamilton are also running for the seat.
