MARYLAND — Maryland gas and diesel prices hit record highs on Monday, AAA reported.

The state's average gas price is now $4.405 per gallon of regular unleaded. Maryland's price is about $1.50 more than this time last year, and it's almost 8 cents above the current national average.

Diesel costs $5.917 per gallon in the Old Line State. That's nearly $2.77 greater than the price a year ago, and it's roughly 38 cents more than the current national average.

These rising prices coincide with the surging cost of crude oil.

Oil costs $105.73 per barrel as of 3:26 p.m., Business Insider reported. That's still below the recent high of $127.98 set on March 8, but the current price is nearly double the recent low of $68.87 set on Dec. 1, 2021.

“With the cost of oil accounting for more than half of the pump price, more expensive oil means more expensive gasoline," AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a Monday press release. “These prices are creeping closer to those record high levels of early March.”

The national average gas price is $4.328, which is a penny less than the record set on March 11.

In Maryland, the price of gas has risen almost 15 cents in the last week. The pump price has also increased by nearly 66 cents in the last month.

The price was lower a month ago because the state temporarily suspended its gas tax.

This 30-day holiday voided Maryland's tax of 36 cents per gallon, slowing the rapidly rising prices at the pump. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot called for a 90-day gas tax holiday, but his pitch never gained much traction.

Maryland reinstated its gas tax on April 17, and prices resumed their climb.
