While 2020 prevented us from coming together last fall in Athens, let's not stop giving. After all, student scholarships are at the core of who we are and why we exist.

Let us now come together and accomplish our overall objective: to create opportunities. For those who knew Tom, he too would have found a way to persevere.

In 2002, Thomas Lonsbury — an avid golfer and member of the McClure School Advisory Board — suggested that the board establish a scholarship for outstanding students in the McClure ITS program and fund it with the proceeds of a golf classic. The Board agreed and promptly named Lonsbury chair of the Advisory Board Thomas Lonsbury Scholarship Golf Classic. Lonsbury chaired the event until his death in 2012. That year’s tournament was the first to be called the Lonsbury Memorial Scholarship Golf Classic. Advisory Board member Garon Gentzel took over leadership of the event until 2020, then passed the torch to new board member Nick Lathrop (who is leading this online effort and the Golf Classic event moving forward).

Proceeds from our event benefit the students of Ohio University J. Warren McClure School of Emerging Communication Technologies. The McClure School combined with the GRIDLab in 2019 and changed the School name to Emerging Communication Technologies while retaining the ITS major — see photo below of the name unveiling.

Fun Facts

  • 18 = the number of golf events the Advisory Board has hosted
  • $287,000+ = the amount of dollars raised for scholarships over those 18 years
  • 36 = the number of scholarships awarded to OU students
  • 90 = the highest number of attendees at one of our hosted golf events

In the spring of 2020, the Advisory Board had the pleasure of awarding nine outstanding students the Thomas Lonsbury Memorial Scholarship. This continues the trend of presenting more than two awards in the same year, which would not be possible without your generous support and that of over 150 annual contributors to our fund. The ITS Advisory Board thanks you for your support!

Your participation in this crowdfunding campaign will help provide support to a deserving student in the McClure ITS program. Thank you!
