It is the policy of the University of Arkansas to encourage fair, efficient, and equitable solutions for problems arising out of the employment relationship. Therefore, the informal and formal grievance policy has been adopted to provide an avenue of resolving grievances for all staff employees. This training will familiarize departments with their responsibilities in dealing with informal and formal grievances.

Disability Awareness Month 2020: 10 Tips for Everyday Digital Access

This workshop/webinar is designed for those who are new to digital accessibility. We’ll cover a few important items that everyone can do to create a more accessible digital world. Some of the areas of accessibility we will cover are email, MS Word Documents, MS PowerPoint and social media.

Disability Awareness Month 2020: Disability Harassment

While the recent #MeToo and #TimesUp movements shed light on workplace sexual harassment, employers remain less familiar with risks associated with workplace disability harassment.  This webinar will focus on the growing trend of disability harassment in the workplace, including: 

    • The difference between workplace harassment and bullying
    • Harassment in the disability context
    • Identifying types of adverse conduct
    • Exploration of selected case law and practical applications

Disability Awareness Month 2020: Designing an Accessible Online Course

Design is powerful in its ability to include some and exclude others. When the design of a course is approached in a thoughtful and inclusive way, it creates an educational environment where all students have an opportunity to learn and demonstrate their mastery of the course content. We’ll explore some of the barriers students with disabilities face in taking online courses and some solutions for removing those barriers.

How can we move beyond compliance to creating a campus where disability is valued as an aspect of diversity and access and inclusion are provided proactively? We’ll explore some of the common barriers faced by faculty, staff and students with disabilities on a college campus and look at ways we can work together to remove those barriers.

Disability Awareness Month 2021: Creating Accessible Meetings in Zoom and Microsoft Teams

Video conferencing technology has been one of the heroes of the pandemic. Not all of these tools are created equal when it comes to accessibility and approaches to delivery can enhance access or create barriers. We’ll look at ways to create a more usable and accessible meeting(s) for everyone.  

Disability Awareness Month 2021: Planning Accessible Meetings

Planning conferences that are accessible to people with disabilities involves focusing on the accessibility of all aspects of your meeting, from choosing a site through promotion, registration, presentations, and handouts to ensuring effective communication. This session explains the general obligations under the ADA and considerations for holding meetings that are open to the public. Participants will receive tips for ensuring access and work through real-life scenarios to walk them through the accommodations process.

Disability Awareness Month 2021: Effective Communication for Deaf or Hearing Impaired

A virtual presentation on effective communication requirements for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. 

Disability Awareness Month 2021: Interacting with Persons with Disabilities

This session covers A to Z basics of interacting with persons with disabilities for your frontline managers, providers of goods and services and any related staffs of Title II entities that deal with the general public on a daily basis. Topics include disability etiquette, recognizing and understanding hidden disabilities, service animals in areas of public accommodation, making reasonable accommodations and reasonable policy modifications. This presentation will also include an interactive discussion of common scenarios that participants will work through to determine solutions in a group environment. These scenarios can then be referred back to as examples that they can use in their daily activities/work.

Disability Awareness Month 2022: Neurodiversity in the Workplace

Neurodiverse employees are a valuable asset to all organizations, though their potential is often less than maximized as an accidental result of workspaces that are not fully accessible and inclusive. This presentation will help employers understand how to support neurodiverse workers through the implementation of universal design and the cultivation of inclusive work culture. Emphasis will be placed on real-world strategies and techniques that can be immediately implemented in order to increase job satisfaction, productivity, and employee retention.

Disability Awareness Month 2022: PDF and Advertising Accessibility

You can advertise your events in ways that are both visually appealing and fully accessible. In this session, Melanie Thornton, Coordinator of Access and Equity Outreach with University of Arkansas Partners for Inclusive Communities, will cover: including an access statement in your flier, creating an accessible source document, and the basics of PDF accessibility.

Join us as we dive into Disability Etiquette. Covering topics such as such as:

    • How companies are looking to be more inclusive of IWD 
    • The relevant laws and regulations relating to disability employment landscape

Disability Awareness Month 2022: Accessible Attitudes Webinar

Presented by Alli Johnson, Accommodation Specialist at the University of Arkansas. Johnson created the workshop to start a conversation about people’s past experiences with the disability community, and to facilitate discussing experiences they have faced that are similar to the challenges that people with disabilities face every day. Through this conversation Johnson hopes to foster deeper empathy and understanding of the disability community and make our society a more accessible and inclusive place for all.

HerStory: Women's History Through an Equity Lens 

This talk featuring Dr. Lisa Corrigan (Professor of Communication and Director of the Gender Studies Program at the University of Arkansas, Fulbright College) examines the shifting political context of women's equality to understand historical and contemporary issues facing U.S. women as a social class, including: unequal political representation, poverty, social violence, the wage gap, the glass ceiling, second shift labor, and leaky pipelines.

Black History Month: A Conversation with Reginald J. Miller: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Modern Age – February 3rd, 2021

“A Conversation with Reginald J. Miller: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Modern Age” featured discussions about diversity and inclusion, how to engage in these conversations in an organization, best practices and guidance for D&I, and how to prepare to work in diverse organizations. A short question-and-answer session followed the talk.
