Grades 3rd-5th

Presented by ODU’s Art Education Department and Chrysler Museum, comes The Light Side of Shadows; a Youth Art Saturday workshop created to address sustainability and playfulness. The Light Side of Shadows encourages students to take a closer look at how light and shadows can be used to create enchanting works of art. Children will explore the artist Anila Quayyum Agha, who utilizes the dynamic contrast between light and dark to communicate her messages about social justice and the significance of place. We will spend some time in the immersive space that houses Agha’s All The Flowers Are For Me, as well as find inspiration in our own shadow play while we investigate how shadows transform with fleeting or shifting light. We will also find connections to the places we find special throughout the museum collection. Students will be introduced to mixed media techniques to produce delightful silhouettes and shadow boxes they will be able to display, before taking their very own creations home to enjoy.

The Light of Shadows is presented by ODU Art Education pre-service teachers, Ashley Velazquez & Bria Tyler.

Grades 6th-8th

At this age of adolescence many children are seeking to discover their identities. In this process they are constantly developing and changing their perceptions. Located at the Chrysler Museum of Art, Framing Mindfulness is a three day art class that allows middle school youth to self reflect and become intune with who they are through art making. Inspired by the current exhibition on view at the Chrysler Museum of Art, To See a World in a Grain of Sand, by artists Nadine Sterk and Lonny Van Ryswyck, Framing Mindfulness will encourage youth to cherish moments of self-awareness, appreciating and connecting to their individual experiences and feelings.

Middle school participants will explore fantastic sand works by artists Nadine Sterk and Lonny van Ryswyck to inspire their own mindful creation. Students will also investigate additional works from the Chrysler Museum of Art collection to examine how art is displayed and preserved. In our class, middle school youth will create therapeutic art through the use of natural and recycled materials, and practice personalized attachment techniques to frame their work. In this part of the class, students will enhance their fine art making abilities by creating a unique sculptural work. By allowing youth the opportunity to build and mount their sand creation, Framing Mindfulness will challenge students to explore how we preserve the things that are valuable to us. Come join us to create works of art that will continually bring you a moment of mindfulness!

Framing Mindfulness is presented by ODU preservice teachers, Amber Pierce and Aubrey Redifer

10:00am-1:00pm

Ages 9th-12th grade

Located at the Chrysler Museum of Art, students will practice hands-on techniques such as carving and sculpting using different sustainable materials. Students will create a vessel that explores how objects are contained and preserved. This class will encourage high school level students to think creatively, with extremely malleable and tactile materials, in response to the students favorite music! Students will view the collection and connect their favorite music styles to the works of art. This will help draw inspiration when approaching their own art making.

The museum will act as inspiration for the artwork by allowing students time to focus on specific artists such as Frank Stella, Lou Stovall,  and Sol LeWitt, along with art objects located in the glass studio. “YASS” (Youth Art Saturday School)  allows students to create something personal and leave with something they can cherish for years to come! Dish Out Some Rhythm will guide students into connecting music with artworks, artists and art making materials. Students will learn that the creative making process is as artful as the finished product.

Dish Out Some Rhythm is presented by ODU preservice teachers, Jedara Reyes and Raymond Shine.
