US reaches 250,000 COVID-19 deaths

The US reached 250,000 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, data shows.

America has recorded the most coronavirus fatalities in the world, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the global coronavirus death toll, according to Johns Hopkins University.

With cases climbing during a second wave, experts have warned that the country is on course to lose more than 511,000 lives from the virus by the end of February, the Guardian reported.

This suggests that the death toll could double in the next four months.

While the US has the highest death toll, it is 12th in per-capita deaths. Belgium has the highest COVID-19 death rate, with 1,292 deaths per million people, while Peru is second with 1,084, according to data from Statista. The US is currently seeing a death rate of 754 per million, the data shows.

The US has recorded more than 11 million coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins.
