EPA to Miss Chemical Deadlines, Exposing Public to Risks (1)

The EPA is failing to meet statutory deadlines and mandates for its toxic chemicals program, leaving the public—including children—at risk, attorneys say.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory agenda, issued on Dec. 10, anticipates the agency missing at least five of 10 deadlines the 2016 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) amendments set to restrict too-risky chemicals already on the U.S. market.

The agenda also offers no timeline to comply with a 2017 appropriations bill requirement to redefine housing that qualifies for protection under the EPA’s lead-based paint regulations. That leaves children in some underserved communities vulnerable, said attorney Tom Neltner, who ...
