Democrats set to boost Malinowski with relief funds for NJ-7

GOP calls visit by Murphy, Menendez, Sweeney and Coughlin a stunt

Four of New Jersey’s top Democrats will be in New Jersey’s 7th district for a government announcement intended to boost the chances of Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) winning a second term in Congress.

Gov. Phil Murphy, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, Senate President Steve Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver will join Malinowski for an economic recovery announcement that is expected to mean federal COVID recovery funds will be coming to the congressman’s district.

Republicans say this is just partisan politics.

“It seems like Murphy is more interested in bailing out his embattled buddy Tom Malinowski with a political stunt, than actually helping New Jersey workers in need,” said GOP State Chairman Doug Steinhardt.

Last week, Murphy and Rep. Donald Norcross (D-Camden) joined Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) in Evesham to announce $60 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) Act to help counties and municipalities that had been left out of the CRF direct allocation plan.  Murphy also kicked in an additional $10 million from the state Department of Human Services t help county Boards of Social Services with expenses related to COVID-19.

Malinowski faces Republican Thomas Kean, Jr., the minority leader of the New Jersey State Senate.

Steinhardt today bashed the Democrats for waiting until weeks before the general election to release CARES ACT funds, and slapped Murphy for releasing just 10% of New Jersey’s $2.4 billion pot of money.

“Phil Murphy has been watching New Jersey drown while he uses our life preserver as a hula hoop,” said Steinhardt. “It’s inconceivable that Murphy sat on this relief for this long while New Jerseyans drowned. We deserve answers.”

The Malinowski announcement will be made at the Flounder Brewing Company in Hillsborough.
