I began my career as a professional journalist in Hong Kong. I found great satisfaction in meeting different people, engaging in in-depth discussions and interviews, and sharing their stories through my articles. During the pandemic, I came across many stories of businesses navigating through the challenges of the countrywide lockdown. One of the most interesting stories I encountered was about Redfern Energy Ltd's business journey. Established in 2017, Redfern Energy provides management, engineering, and construction services to the aviation sector. The company was running smoothly and had a significant contract. However, everything changed as the pandemic hit in 2020, which caused a global aviation shutdown. With the contract termination from a major client, the lifeline supporting the business will be cut in 90 days. Hit hard by the sudden halt of business, Ben Fearns did not rush to make any decisions. Instead, he took a moment to reflect and realized that the engineering and construction industries generally do not come to a complete stop. To ensure the longevity of the business, Fearns opted to pivot the company's focus to provide process engineering and manufacturing support to their partners across the UK. Transitioning a business to a new direction can be challenging, but the hard work of the entire team at Redfern Energy has paid off. With the support of GM Business Growth Hub, the company has successfully transformed from a consultancy firm to a professional service provider for manufacturers and utilities in the UK. Their business now primarily focuses on maintaining essential machinery and infrastructure, accounting for 85% of their operations. As a result, they have gained recognition from global customers in the water and food industries. The story of Redfern Energy showcased their resolution and resilience, echoing the national spirit of "keep calm and carry on" in the face of adversity. There is always light at the end of the tunnel; what we need to do is to keep moving forward. At the beginning of 2024, I hope this story gives you the courage to face the challenges ahead.
With the assistance of our business advisors, Redfern Energy Ltd has improved the manufacturing process and efficiency. This has led to the successful transformation of the company from a consultancy firm to a professional service provider for manufacturers and utilities in the UK. “That wouldn’t be possible for us to achieve it without the support from the Hub,” said Ben Fearns, owner of Redfern Energy Ltd.
