Tulane team wins prize in national
 invention competition
A team of biomedical engineering students at Tulane University has won a prestigious award at the annual Collegiate Inventors Competition, a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

TrachTech — whose members are Morgan Bohrer, Stephen Hahn, Michael L’Ecuyer, Alex Verne and faculty advisor Mark Mondrinos — won the Arrow Electronics People’s Choice Award for the invention of a specialized device to clean intubation tubes without the risk of extubation.

The team developed the device as a response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, saying that with ventilators in high demand, it’s essential that these machines remain clean and safe.

“In at least 84% of intubation tubes, biofilm buildup occurs, restricting airflow and increasing the likelihood that patients will develop ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP),” the team wrote in its project description. “(The device) is specifically designed to efficiently remove biofilms and debris from the tubes and maintain continued airflow from ventilators during the cleaning process.”

TrachTech was one of five winners in the competition, which was presented in a virtual format and judged by some of the most influential inventors and innovation experts in the nation. The Arrow Electronics People’s Choice Award comes with a $2,000 prize.

Hahn said he and his teammates began the project as their senior capstone for biomedical engineering. They started with the broad topic of intubation, then narrowed the project down to biofilm buildup on intubation tubes after consulting with medical professionals at Tulane Medical School and University Medical Center.

“Since then, we have been continually working to design, test and improve the project,” Hahn said.

The team recently completed a six-week cohort with the NSF LSU I-Corps Sites program, where students learned about the commercialization process. The program included such topics as patents and copyrights, licensing, customer identification, market research and possible startup opportunities.

“Our current plan is to continue advancing our prototype and testing to effectively prove its efficacy and begin looking for ways to introduce our product to the market,” Hahn said.

The team is also entering Tulane’s Novel Tech Challenge, which awards monetary prizes for the best ideas that improve the environment, health, education and urban infrastructure through technology

As a new faculty member in the Tulane School of Science and Engineering, assistant professor of biomedical engineering Mark Mondrinos said he was honored to serve as the team’s advisor.

“I guided them in the process of testing and validating their device, but they did all the creative work,” he said. “We are hoping to publish their design and data in an academic journal. I am so proud of Stephen and the rest of the TrachTech team. They were my first senior design team as new faculty. I was lucky to wind up with such an excellent group of students.”

Look to the sky starting Monday to catch the peak of the Leonid meteor shower.

On the night of Nov. 16-17, about 15 to 20 meteors per hour will be visible in the night sky, according to AccuWeather.

The Leonids are famous for producing meteor storms, meaning thousands of meteors streak across the sky every hour. However, storms normally occur every 33 years, and none are expected in 2020. The last storm was in 2001.
The best time to see the shower is after midnight with the constellation Leo high overhead. The meteors will appear to originate from Leo, although you don't have to look in that direction.

Find a dark area and lie back to have the entire night sky in your sight. Remember to dress warmly, too!

The Consulate General of France in Louisiana will display an outdoor exhibition of new works by New Orleans photographer David Spielman capturing local life amid the coronavirus pandemic. "New Orleans: Tested Again" is a series of black and white photos showing New Orleanians going about daily life, such as grocery shopping, attending church and returning to schools.
Inspired by exhibitions displayed on the fences of Paris' Luxembourg Gardens, "New Orleans: Tested Again" will be attached to the fences of the Consulate General at 2406 Prytania St. The photos will be on display through Nov. 23.
"The history of France and New Orleans is long, rich and extremely important," a short exhibit statement says. "For more than 300 years, in good and bad times, we have stood together. During this worldwide pandemic we are once again side by side. Together we will thrive."

NATIONAL BUTTON DAY
National Button Day on November 16th celebrates the function of buttons and the hobby of button collection. Step aside zippers, laces, and snaps. Honor the button.
Founded in 1938, the National Button Society recognized button collecting as an organized hobby. Both novice and advanced button collectors celebrate the enjoyment of collecting on this day.
Do you remember your grandmother or your mother snipping the buttons off shirts headed for the rag basket? Those buttons often collected in jars or tins. Maybe you even played games or strung them for ornaments and crafts. The buttons were fun to stack into piles, sort by color or size, or scatter and slide across the floor or table making up different games each time.
Crafters across the country utilize buttons in creative ways. They are some of the best at finding new uses for old items. There are thousands of button collectors in the United States.
Buttons have been made of a variety of materials. Ancient buttons were formed from natural and readily available substances such as stone, shell, bone, clay, or wood. In more modern times, metals, plastics, resins, and acrylics have been used. While buttons were usually functional to fasten two pieces of cloth together, they also served as decoration.
While buttons today can be simple disks with two or four holes allowing a needle and thread to pass through, button makers create more elaborate designs. If you can imagine it, there’s probably a button like it. From animals and food to iconic buildings and famous people, button makers make them. They’re colorful and fun. While the fun ones may be less practical, they still function.
NATIONAL FAST FOOD DAY
On November 16th food lovers get a dose of their favorite convenience food on National Fast Food Day. Whether they use the drive-thru, dine-in or get it to go, fast food will grill up, fry up and broil up menu staples.
First popularized in the United States in the 1950s, fast food is considered any meal with low preparation time and served to a customer in a packaged form. The meal makes for quick dine-in, take-out or take-away. Most fast-food restaurants offer drive-thru service.
Merriam-Webster dictionary first recognized the term “fast food” in 1951.
Following World War I, automobiles became popular and more affordable. At that time, restaurants introduced the drive-in.
Much like today’s food trucks, Walter Anderson first began selling hamburgers out of an old streetcar body at a Wichita intersection. While the menu was limited, the hamburgers were a crowd-pleaser. When the popularity of his hamburgers grew, he partnered with E.W. Ingram and opened the first White Castle in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas. The enterprising restauranteurs were the first in the fast-food business. They sold hamburgers for five cents each.
The United States has the largest fast food industry in the world. American fast-food restaurants are located in over 100 countries.
Fun fact: The first Happy Meal was served in June of 1979.
While fast-food began as sandwiches and sides, the menus expanded over-time. Today fast-food includes fish, a variety of fried chicken, tacos, pizza and a wide selection of sides. Sodas quench the thirst and desserts sweeten the menu. From ice cream and shakes to pies and cakes, fast food delivers.
As times changed, restaurants added breakfast items to the menu, too. Expanding their hours increased their workforce and their menu options, as well. However, not all fast-food chains offer breakfast.

Demand for cotton quickly resulted in the realization that a steamer could carry more cotton if it was compressed into bales. Across the city, large compresses were erected at a cost ranging from $20,000 to $40,000 ($575,000 to $1.15 million today) in warehouses along the river. Pictured here is one such cotton press from 1890. There were between 25 and 30 cotton presses active, mostly in the upper First District from Delord Street to Felicity Street, and from Magazine Street to Water Street.
After picking, cotton boles are placed into a cotton gin where seeds are separated from fiber. The accumulated fiber is shipped from the farm to the cotton press where it is fed into the top of the machine seen here. The steam powered giant then compresses the cotton until it becomes the size of one of the large bales seen on the left side of the photograph. These have been wrapped in burlap and secured with either iron or rope ties. Each large bale weighs approximately 500-pounds.
Newly compressed bales are then transported to the port where the shipping company paid about $0.40 per bale for the compressed cargo. Riverboats like the Natchez or the J.M. White could carry as many 5,000 bales although the average load was closer to 3,500 bales. Once woven into cloth, each bale would produce 8,340 handkerchiefs, 760 men's shirts, 290 men's jeans, 900 women's blouses, 3650 women's jeans, 210 full-size sheets, and 3,670 men's socks.

Author Terry Flettrich lived an eventful life of 99 years. She was born in 1917 in Omsk, Siberia (Russia) and, from the age of three, grew up in Shanghai, China, where her father had been sent on a trade mission by the new Soviet government. In 1937, while a premed student in Shanghai, she became a journalistic photographer covering the Japanese invasion of China. Her concerned parents sent her, for safety, to the United States. She completed her education at Linfield College (in Oregon) and Columbia University (in New York City). In the 1940s, she married New Orleans artist Leonard Flettrich and began working in local radio. Soon she took to television in the infancy of that medium, appearing in test programs filmed at the D. H. Holmes Department Store on Canal Street. After WDSU signed on as New Orleans' first commercial TV station in December, 1948, she joined the Midday television program as a regular, and played the role of "Mrs. Muffin" as a children's show host. The show was known for allowing local children to celebrate their birthdays on the air. Eventually she would become an anchor, and a producer, on Midday. After the death of her first husband in 1970 and the sale of WDSU in 1972, she moved to New England (Hancock, Maine). She ran a country inn but also remained active in broadcasting as a reporter for Good Morning America (specializing in stories on aging in America). She returned to New Orleans in 2013 with her second husband, Robert Rohe, a professional musician. She was inducted into the New Orleans Broadcaster's Hall of Fame (in 1993) and received a lifetime achievement award from the Press Club of New Orleans (in 2000).
Flettrich knew her subject well, because she and her family lived near Bourbon Street in the Faubourg Marigny (just off of Esplanade Avenue). They actually referred to their home as The House In the Bend of Bourbon Street. The book was illustrated by her daughter, Lo-An. The story was given a musical adaptation that was performed by the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony. One of the performers was her future second husband, a bassist.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT: One of her greatest contributions was in the culinary field. It is said that Flettrich was responsible for convincing her friend Ella Brennan to hire Paul Prudhomme as the chef of the famous Commander's Palace restaurant!

The Hot Club of New Orleans have challenged themselves with an awesome task: take the swing era music of Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, and Stéphane Grappelli (among others), retain the classic groove, avoid sounding like a museum piece, and then infuse it with their own modern sensibilities. These guys swing like mad. They're not a bunch of stuffy old "moldy figs." Their love of this music is evidenced by their passionately delivered solos and sly vocals. With two guitar players and an upright bass, they deliver the goods you'd expect from one of the most swinging drummers in New Orleans, but in keeping with the classic format of this music, there is no drummer.

The Hot Club of New Orleans excels at generating that warm, swinging drive that made Django Reinhardt famous. At the same time, they transcend the idiom by eschewing blind obedience to stylistic conventions. They play a somewhat laid-back, exuberant groove which is typical of New Orleans, but they are so tight that at times they seem almost superhuman.

Every Wednesday Streaming LIVE on StageIt from d.b.a in New Orleans.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. He cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history including Lee Dorsey, Johnny Adams, and Irma Thomas before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters, who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

Celebration in the Oaks to be a drive-through attraction in 2020
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2021. To adapt to coronavirus, the park has made several changes, including that it will be a driving instead of walking experience.
Celebration in the Oaks used to be viewable by car, but the park changed it to pedestrian-only in 2004. The drive is 2.25 miles, and guests will not be allowed to get out of their cars to explore exhibits.
New exhibits include a salute to medical personnel. Displays from past years with a driving option will return, including "Monstro," the whale from Pinocchio and a 15-foot tall waving Santa Claus. Regular attractions include lighted dinosaur figures, a unicorn, a pirate ship in the lagoon, flamingos, a Who Dat tree, scenes of Jackson Square, a musical tribute and more.
Admission will be by timed ticketing, and a limited number of tickets will be available. Tickets for cars and SUVs range from $18.99 to $32.99 for up to eight guests in a vehicle. There also are options for limos and party busses. Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE BEAVER MOON?
November’s full Moon was traditionally called the Beaver Moon by a number of Native Americans and colonial Americans. Many Native American groups used the monthly Moons and nature’s corresponding signs as a calendar to track the seasons.
Why the “Beaver” Moon? This is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient stores of food for the long winter ahead. During the time of the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready pelts.
