Beyond Roe: The Fight for Our Future

On June 24, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. It’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is devastating; for low-income women and disproportionately for women of color, the impact will be catastrophic. And the harms of this ruling will surely extend well beyond abortion.

Make no mistake: We will not cede this fight.

We demand action from lawmakers—at all levels of government—who know the public is on our side. We will continue to press ahead in the courts. And we will work to forge stronger constitutional guardrails: jurisprudence that recognizes the fullest scope of reproductive autonomy under the law.

We invite you to explore the array of essays, audio and video content published here, describing the policy and legal paths forward. And we are proud to share and amplify the words, reflections and vision of many movement colleagues and allies. Please scroll through the site to read them all.

We fight on—for reproductive health, rights and justice—together.

Young people are already mobilizing, creating their own support networks for abortion, and will never let abortion access disappear. Right now, you can join our Youth Abortion Support Collective or YouthASC, a national network of young people committed to supporting each other, and connecting other young people to abortion care.

Diana Thu-Thao Rhodes, Vice President of Policy, Partnerships, and Organizing, Advocates for Youth

This leaked draft SCOTUS decision shows us what we already knew: The justices on the Supreme Court have once again shown their utter disregard for people who need abortions in this nation—bowing down to the whims of white supremacists and extremists. Abortion access has been systematically under attack in this country for decades, and it is beyond time for abortion to be liberated from legal barriers and funding concerns. We are not going back, and we are not backing down. Donate to abortion funds and Keep Our Clinics, and join national actions by visiting liberateabortion.org/getinvolved.

Sharmin Hossain, Campaign Director, Liberate Abortion

We fund procedures for folks in both North and South Carolina and we anticipate a crush of callers traveling from S.C. into N.C. as trigger bans fall into place. Don't write off the South—invest in our infrastructure!

The Carolina Abortion Fund

We must de-stigmatize abortion—as we show up at marches or protests across the country, do not use imagery of hangers or Handmaid's Tale. Do not shy away from the word abortion by saying that you are “pro-choice.“ Be loud and be proud, because abortion is healthcare, abortion is essential, abortion is safe and liberating. Abortion clinics and funds are still open and ready to support patients in every state—so go out and support your local indie abortion fund.

Andrea Reyes, Deputy and Political Director, Deeds Not Words

Investing in the infrastructure and capacity of abortion funds is key for navigating the new landscape of abortion ban landmines blocking healthcare access for half of this country. Fund leaders are experts on the ground who have crucial abortion access insight for those living in hostile landscapes and work directly with patients needing abortion care, offering financial and logistical support.

Eloisa Lopez, Executive Director, Pro-Choice Arizona and the Abortion Fund of Arizona

Raise our voices and fight back with strong community organizing and education. When they come for one of us, they come for all of us. It’s time to level up our strategy and fight for Nevadans and all people in this country.

Annette Magnus, Executive Director, Battle Born Progress

We must be loud and clear. We are not going anywhere. Abortion is not going anywhere. While some states will make it harder for people to get the care they need, we know that our communities are resourceful and resilient. As doctors and providers of community based care, we will do all we can to ensure our patients get the compassionate, comprehensive care they need and deserve. We will not give up.

Dr. Jamila Perritt, President and CEO, Physicians for Reproductive Health

Each of us has a vital role in protecting abortion access—whether it’s combating stigma by talking about abortion with your friends and family, donating to your local abortion fund, or advocating for state-level protections for this essential right. Now is the time to speak out, and no action is too small.

J, Board Member, Vermont Access to Reproductive Freedom

In this time of reactionary resource mobilization, we encourage people to donate their time, money and attention to explicitly BIPOC-led abortion funds, especially those located in states most affected by this decision, such as: The Afiya Center (Texas), The Yellowhammer Fund (Alabama), Holler Health Justice (West Virginia) and Indigenous Women Rising.

E.N. West, Co-Director, Surge Reproductive Justice

This is a great time to learn your local abortion laws, learn what your community might be up against post-Dobbs, and learn how you or someone you love can access care. Become a resource in your community, and support the resources like abortion funds that have been showing up again and again to keep abortion accessible.

Utah Abortion Fund

Florida’s abortion landscape is rapidly changing. One thing people can do is 1) spread the word about self managed abortion and plancpills.org 2) donate to your local abortion fund 3) say the word abortion!

Tampa Bay Abortion Fund

First off, familiarize yourself and your friends with all abortion options, from clinics to abortion funds to abortion pills by mail: noisefornow.org/resources. If you are able, become a sustaining monthly donor to the Abortion Within Reach campaign, which supports Independent Abortion Clinics and Abortion Funds throughout the country at abortionwithinreach.org.

Amelia Bauer, Co-Founder and Executive Director, NOISE FOR NOW

As the courts and legislatures work to unjustly block access to abortion, we want people to know that abortion pills are available through alternate routes in all 50 states, they are medically safe and effective, and can be obtained right now to keep in your medicine cabinet—just in case. We hope the information we provide at plancpills.org helps people understand the medical and legal considerations around self-managed abortion and make their own decisions about what is best for them.

Elisa Wells, Co-Founder and Co-Director, Plan C

Queer and trans people need access to the complete range of reproductive healthcare services, including abortion care. Abortion is not just a cisgender straight women’s issue—many queer and trans people of many genders can become pregnant or are having sex in ways that can result in pregnancy. Hold your representatives accountable if they have refused to wholeheartedly support abortion access and demand that they stand firm in their support by using the word abortion (rather than euphemism like “a woman’s right to choose,” etc.) when they talk about it. The RJ movement will continue to mobilize, fight, take action, strategize and hold folx with political power accountable!

Dr. Krystal Redman, Executive Director, SPARK Reproductive Justice NOW!, Inc.

We're asking all allies to start by supporting abortion funds. We need to make sure people who will need to travel to seek care have the financial and logistical support needed to access abortions in other states. Beyond that, it's important to recognize that the courts will not save us. Instead, we're going to have to fight state by state to win elections and change the laws in each state. If you're a pro-choice ally, now is the time to step up and volunteer at the local level (state legislature in particular).

Men4Choice

The courts have proven again and again that they won't save us. We need local, state and federal elected leaders to enact bold solutions that address the realities of getting an abortion in the United States and break down the barriers for people of color working to make ends meet when they seek care. It's up to all of us to mobilize for abortion justice and build a future where abortion care is available for everyone who needs it. Abortion justice can't wait.

Morgan Hopkins, Interim Executive Director of Campaigns and Strategies, All* Above All

Abortion funds have been readying themselves for this moment for decades. They have the wisdom, values and relationships to get people the abortion care they want and need, no matter what happens in the courts or the legislatures. Abortion funds will never stop funding abortion and building power with people who seek abortions, but we need your support. This fight is not a short-term crisis, but rather an escalation of a decades-long concerted effort to restrict, shame and legislate away abortion access. This is the time to get connected to your local abortion fund as a recurring donor, volunteer, or individual member.

Debasri Ghosh, Managing Director, National Network of Abortion Funds

Health policy decisions should be grounded in justice and evidence. Full stop. As scholars and clinicians focused on ensuring equitable abortion and contraception care, we will be researching the real world impact of this odious and unwise decision to eventually overcome it.

Society of Family Planning

Hit the streets! Hold those in power accountable! We will make sure that everyone who needs an abortion will have one, and keep fighting for the bold vision of abortion care and reproductive justice we deserve.

Paris Hatcher, Black Feminist Future

Abortion restrictions and the criminalization of pregnancy outcomes impact our most vulnerable communities. Access to abortion indicates better outcomes across systems such as health, education, housing and more for marginalized communities.

Zaena Zamora, Executive Director, Frontera Fund

WRRAP continues to be on the cutting edge by adding virtual clinics and SMA providers to our growing list of healthcare providers we work with. Our number one priority is our patients who need funding at higher levels. We need everyone to reach deep into their pockets to donate at wrrap.org/donate so we can continue to keep ahead of the ever-growing demand as a national independent abortion fund helping fund patients in all states.

Sylvia Ghazarian, Executive Director, Women's Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (WRRAP)

We want people to invest in abortion funds and independent abortion clinic. Use your skills, passions and platforms to fundraise for abortion access!

Rachael Guerra Lorenzo, Executive Director, Indigenous Women Rising

Despite the leaked draft opinion, abortion is still legal in the U.S. and NBEC is committed to defending this right as well as ensuring its equitable access to all communities. As a reproductive justice organization advocating for the human rights of Black women and birthing people locally and transnationally, NBEC also recognizes the limitations of this framing. We owe it to all women and girls to ensure they are prepared and are able to fulfill their potential in life, as well as have the human right to decide when and how they will have a family.

Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, President, National Birth Equity Collaborative (NBEC)

Marching is fun and all, but the only way to get change is with those who hold office.

Jax West, Leader of Illinois Handmaids

People need to speak up and confront anti-abortion rhetoric everywhere they hear it—with friends, family, etc. I'd like to see activists doing everything they can to get people to the polls.

Brooke A., Reproductive Rights Coalition

People must organize effect campaigns that will capture the real opinion of community members when it comes to abortions. It is not a time for division but a united front and everyone standing together. I want people to look at Roe v. Wade in it's entirety and not just focus on the abortion sections.

Kenda Sutton-El, Executive Director, Birth In Color RVA

Getting an abortion is a widely shared experience—1 in 4 women gets an abortion in their lifetime, but if Roe v. Wade is overturned, 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion. Across the South, the Plains and the Midwest accessing an abortion would be nearly impossible, so it is imperative that we support those who need abortion by donating to abortion funds, participating in civic action, and advocating for pro-abortion policies.

Elizabeth Nash, Interim Associate Director of State Issues, the Guttmacher Institute

The threat to the rights, freedoms, and bodies of women and people with uteruses are more dire than anytime in living memory, and most of it is wrapped up in the mantle of religion. So the pro-choice majority in the United States—including millions who support abortion rights because of their faith, not in spite of it—needs to get louder than ever before. When Roe falls, far-right extremists will claim it as a victory for religion, for faith, for Christianity. We need to show them that is simply a lie.

Jamie L. Manson, M.Div., President, Catholics for Choice

When Roe falls, our movement will have a unique opportunity to sweep much of the public into expressing outright rejection of the decision, and to engage previously passive supporters in efforts to neutralize its impact. Aiding and abetting abortion—in the form of funding abortions, sharing information about pills and saving independent clinics—is a moral imperative and a community responsibility which cannot be left to activists alone.

Amelia Bonow, Shout Your Abortion

WMF Wisconsin has been supporting people who need abortions for over 50 years, and we will continue doing so no matter what. In addition to donating to support Wisconsin residents to get abortion care—including traveling to other states—you can make sure you know and can share how folks can get abortions, funding and practical support, legal support if needed, and compassionate affirming care.

WMF Wisconsin

Right now, people can support organizations like Midwest Access Project that are working to increase access through community education and training abortion providers. Donate your money to existing reproductive health/rights/justice organizations, abortion clinics, and local abortion funds and show love to abortion providers and people seeking abortion care.

Midwest Access Project Staff

There are many actions that people can do to support abortion clinics and funds: Buy the clinic staff lunch or snacks, escort at your local clinic, donate to an abortion fund, send a postcard of support to your local clinic, talk to your family and friends about the importance of abortion and pay attention to political candidates and their stance on abortion. Elections matter. You CAN make a difference with one of these simple steps.

Tammi Kromenaker, Clinic Director, Red River Women's Clinic

Roe v. Wade has never been enough for so many people in this country, and abortion funds like Baltimore Abortion Fund need committed support from donors and volunteers to continue to fight for a world where abortion isn’t just legal—it’s accessible, affordable and destigmatized. No matter what comes next, we will be here funding abortion, taking care of each other, and affirming the human right to control our bodies and our lives.

Brigitte Winter, Co-President, Baltimore Abortion Fund

While there is so much attention being paid to the federal courts and the Congress, now is the time engage in your own community! Learn about the local or state elections that are coming up that could affect abortion access where you live, connect with local reproductive justice organizations, support your local independent clinics, and donate to your local abortion fund. The battle is best fought in your own backyard!

Kwajelyn Jackson, Executive Director of Feminist Women's Health Center

Everyone loves someone who had abortions. This moment is crucial for everyone to speak up and show their love for people who have abortions in public, at the dinner table, and in our families. We must continue to fight for abortion access at any time and for any reason.

Renee Bracey Sherman, Executive Director, We Testify

The people that will be most affected are those with the least means, as always. Two things everyone should be doing now and in the months ahead: 1) Speak up: If you are one of the one in four that have had an abortion, tell your story to EVERYONE—we need to normalize abortion and end the stigma that makes it easier to ban. 2) Find and support your local abortion fund—volunteer and donate. There is at least one in EVERY state. https://abortionfunds.org/funds/

Fran Sachs, President of the Board, EMA (Emergency Medical Assistance)

Say the damned word! If we had been having conversations about abortion at all levels since 1973, no one could stigmatize abortion or us for having them and providing them. Keep calm and have abortion conversations!

Abortion Conversation Projects

I want us to envision a world where we not only fight for the legality of Roe, but dream beyond what it truly means for people to have access to abortion care regardless of immigration status or zip code. We will continue to fight for abortion care within our communities because our morality is not based on legality and everyone deserves abortion on demand without apology.

Nancy Cárdenas Peña, Texas State Director for Policy and Advocacy, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice

Even for New Mexicans, abortion care can still be out of reach. Because of the significant work done in the state by people of color, abortion is safe and legal in the state for now. However, we must all educate ourselves about existing barriers to reproductive health care and advocate for expanded and protected access.

Jacqueline Aguirre, Reproductive Justice Lead, ProgressNow New Mexico

It took forced birth activists 50 years, and plenty of single-issue voters, to tear down rights we've had; we must be prepared and willing to do the same to get the stolen rights back. They want you to lose hope, but you must hold onto your hope and your will to fight because this fight is too important to ignore.

Robin Dusek, Policy Director, She Votes Illinois

Be brave and make sure everyone around you knows you support abortion access. Pregnant people in the South are going to need all the support they can get accessing abortion, and you never know who might need your help.

Jennifer Pepper, President/CEO, CHOICES

While we are all grappling with a series of emotions, we have to focus on what we can do. First, find a local abortion fund to support. We must do all we can no matter where we live to help pregnant people get the care the need. Second, learn the status of abortion laws in your state and get involved with advocating to protect and expand access. It will take a steady drumbeat of citizen lobbying, uplifting stories, and protests to keep the pressure on so we can make change. Don’t forget to tell and bring a friend. Third, VOTE! None of this changes without pro-abortion rights legislators at the local, state and federal levels to clear the way for our bodily autonomy to be secured and make access a reality for all.

Tarina Keene, Executive Director, Pro-Choice Virginia

Some states may seem friendly to abortion because of the region they are situated in, but that is not always the case—for example, New Hampshire is in New England but is constantly facing attacks on abortion access from the right wing. That is why it is crucial for people to fund abortion locally and be vigilant for abortion access even in places where the situation may, on the surface, seem less dire.

Josie Pinto, Executive Director and Co-Founder, The Reproductive Freedom Fund of NH

Think locally: Give to your local abortion fund. Prioritize supporting organizations that are led by and center the needs of women of color. Talk to your friends and family about what access to abortion has meant for you, your partner, your children, your dreams.

Amanda Allen, Senior Counsel and Director, Lawyering Project

Roe v. Wade has always been the floor, not the ceiling—abortion funds like ours exist because legality has never been enough. Now is the time to invest in, support and uplift your local abortion fund and independent abortion clinic.

Jennifer Lim, Communications Manager, New Mexico Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice

Elders can join us in meeting this moment by working across generation to amplify the truth, which is that abortions make so much in our lives possible and we will never stop fighting for true access for all.

Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights (GRR!)

Donate to your LOCAL abortion support organizations.

Erin Smith, Executive Director, Kentucky Health Justice Network

We can no longer cede moral authority to abortion extremists and must put our faith and values into action for reproductive freedom. It's past time for people of faith, conscience and goodwill to boldly advocate for abortion access—including self-managed abortion through medication—without apology.

Elaina Ramsey, Executive Director, Faith Choice Ohio

In California, advocates, organizations, communities, legislators and policymakers continue to work on a range of bills and efforts to protect the rights of all people including non-Californians to access abortion here; to protect the rights of abortion providers patients anyone that supports them and make sure that all existing and all potential gaps in access are filled. As people of color in this country, we have rarely if ever been able to depend on courts that our lives, and our families, and and our bodies matter. We have always found ways to care for ourselves and this doesn't stop now. We are the ones we've been waiting for and we will continue in la lucha.

Laura Jimenez, Executive Director, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice

Support independent abortion clinics and abortion funds, such as Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City and the Iowa Abortion Access Fund. These funds and clinics are the bedrock of abortion care in the United States. We WILL persevere by continuing to fund and help people of all backgrounds access essential abortion care after the fall of Roe v. Wade.

Allie Wampler, RN, WHNP-BC, SANE-A, Abortion Nurse and Board Member, Iowa Abortion Access Fund

States where abortion services are protected must rise in solidarity to help those in the many states where these rights will be denied. Massachusetts’s four abortion funds are working together to prepare for this new reality: the Abortion Rights Fund of Western Massachusetts, the Eastern Massachusetts Fund, the Jane Fund, and Tides for Reproductive Freedom.

Marisa Pizii, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, Abortion Rights Fund of Western Massachusetts

The National Partnership for Women & Families stands with you today and always. We will continue to defend everyone's right to access abortion care and exercise control over their bodies. We will not give up and we will not go back. We urge Ms. readers to make their voices heard and demand their elected representatives vote to uphold abortion rights.

Jocelyn Frye, President, National Partnership for Women & Families

As the landscape shifts, it’s important that we recognize that attacks on abortion rights are about more than just abortion—they are about the control of reproduction that is woven into our society and impacts us in every way, from fertility and family planning, to childbirth and lactation. It’s simply not enough to focus our efforts on abortion rights—we must work to dismantle the systems that uphold this reproductive control and redesign them from the ground up.

Elephant Circle

Don’t be fooled for a second that they will stop with this. This is an invasion of privacy, this is a seizure of people’s bodies. Bodily autonomy affects not just women and trans people, it affects our families, our partners and our communities. Support your local abortion funds. We will continue to help people access abortion care and overcome barriers as the landscape shifts.

Mei-Ling Shaw, Iowa Abortion Access Fund

Organize within your community to talk about abortion boldly, without shame and free from stigma. Roe was always the floor, and in the coming months we must make the case for legal, available and affordable abortion care through state-level policy by destigmatizing abortion. This movement should be led by young people who overwhelmingly support abortion access, because our generation values bodily autonomy and the freedom to determine our own future.

Arianna Morales, Policy Manager, New Era Colorado

The most important thing folks can do right now is find out what organizations exist locally that directly assist people seeking abortion, particularly abortion funds and practical care funds since these are the organizations already planning for the potential landscape of abortion access in the coming months. Additionally, if you aren’t already aware, find out what your state’s current laws are and what pro-abortion or anti-abortion legislation has been introduced so you’re aware of how these laws will affect you, your family, your friends and your neighbors.

Marcee Lichtenwald, Board Member, The Agnes Reynolds Jackson Fund

Advocates in North Carolina have worked tirelessly to stop any new abortion restrictions from being passed in our state since 2016. We have been able to hold the line in our state despite having a hostile legislature, and we can and will continue to hold that line.

Tara Romano, Executive Director, Pro-Choice North Carolina

We can fight and take our rights back … by choosing elected officials who are brave enough to fight for us.

Diana Gómez, Advocacy Director, Progress Texas

Abortion pills are available via the Plan C website. It would be ideal if all those at risk of an unintended pregnancy kept Plan C on hand just as we do with Plan B—emergency contraception.

Kate Cunningham, President, A Fund, Inc.

Established abortion funds will need your contributions more than ever as patients will have to travel greater distances, miss extra days of work, and find childcare to access clinics. Please donate to your local funds or funds in states with trigger laws where abortion will be unavailable immediately if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

A Fund, Inc. of Kentucky

Comprehensive reproductive health access in the U.S. South is in jeopardy, as it has increasingly been for some time. In this critical moment, our research has shown that community leaders—like local abortion funds and reproductive justice affirming religious leaders—are resources that can lessen financial, logistical and social barriers to needed care.

Whitney Rice, Director, Center for Reproductive Health Research in the Southeast (RISE)

Find the abortion and practical support funds in their area and throw their support, volunteer time (where applicable), and, most of all, money behind them! Plug into the local orgs and activists already doing the work and see where you can support and uplift them.

Kristin Hady, Community Engagement Coordinator, Abortion Access Front

It's time we understand abortion as part of the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare. As a birth justice advocate, access to abortion matters deeply to me. It's a vital part of how we keep people safe, how we help Black women protect their health.

Jamarah Amani, Midwife, Southern Birth Justice Network

The New York Abortion Access Fund supports anyone living in or traveling to New York who is unable to pay fully for an abortion. You can support them at this critical time by making a gift directly at nyaaf.org/donate or by activating your community and joining our Fundathon, our largest annual grassroots fundraising celebration during which we are trying to reach (and hopefully surpass!) a goal of $200,000 (details can be found on our website, nyaaf.org).

New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF)

At the core of our movement for reproductive justice is community power, and we're staying in this fight! In the face of a Supreme Court that is doing the opposite, organizations such as COLOR will not stop working towards a future where everyone has control over their own bodies and lives—now and always.

Dusti Gurule, President and CEO, COLOR

In this moment we are all faced with the responsibility of being informed resources on abortion for our communities and we all must pledge to protect and promote the safety of pregnant people. We must call out the the white supremacist, heteronormative and patriarchal ideologies that are driving the continued attacks on bodily autonomy.

Qudsiyyah Shariyf, Deputy Director, The Chicago Abortion Fund

Donate to and volunteer with abortion funds and practical support organizations to tangibly support people who need abortions. Push back on abortion stigma—having or needing an abortion is nothing to be ashamed of.

Stephanie Loraine, Co-Director, Florida Access Network

Legality does not always equate to access—in Louisiana, one of the most heightened battlegrounds for anti-reproductive health legislation, barriers to abortion have already created a post-Roe reality for many, with barriers to abortion disproportionately impacting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. We are committed to our mission of funding abortions and assisting with abortion access the Gulf South, but need your help through donations to continue to serve our community.

A.J. Haynes, Reproductive Justice Advocate, Board Chair, New Orleans Abortion Fund

Everyday, abortion funds fill the gaps created by ineffective public policy that leaves behind people who are systematically marginalized and struggling to make ends meet. One of the best things folks can do right now is donate to their local, state and/or national abortion funds.
