Schmitt to challenge Maloney for House seat

MONTGOMERY – Republican State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt is going to challenge incumbent Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney for the New York 18th District seat next year.

Schmitt has filed his notice of candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission.

The election is in the fall 2022 and is listed as a targeted seat by the National Republican Campaign Committee.

Schmitt will formally announce his candidacy at a rally on Tuesday.

Schmitt is a member of the U.S. Army National Guard and Assemblyman for the 99th State Assembly District which includes the towns of Stony Point, Wawayanda, Goshen, Hamptonburgh, Chester, Blooming Grove, New Windsor, Cornwall, Highlands, and Woodbury.

In all five of Maloney’s runs for Congress, he defeated his Republican challengers. In his first bid in 2012, he defeated incumbent Nan Hayworth.

In 2014, he defeated Hayworth and independent Scott Smith.

In 2016, Maloney beat Republican Phil Oliva.

Two years later, in 2018, he defeated Republican James O’Donnell.

In 2020, Maloney defeated Republican Chele Farley and independent Scott Smith.

The 18th Congressional District includes all of Orange and Putnam counties, and portions of Dutchess and Westchester counties.
