from THE CEO Dear Friends of New Orleans & Company,

H

appy new year! 2024 promises to be a strong year for New Orleans’ tourism industry. This issue of Tourism Matters highlights what’s ahead, but as we kick off 2024, it is worth noting our many successes of 2023. As you know, tourism does not just happen. It takes consistent effort, promotion, funding, and public relations to help our city, region and state stand out amid intense global competition. That’s why I am so proud of our team at New Orleans & Company and our partners. Our 2023 results include: Sales • Helped secure new events such as Miss Universe, NOLA Pickle Fest, Barrett-Jackson Car Auction and Labor Day Sugar Bowl Country Kickoff starring Garth Brooks • Booked in excess of 1.4 million hotel room nights for meetings and conventions, both at the convention center and in-house at hotel properties across the city in 2024 and ten years into the future • Executed a comprehensive and unprecedented Built To Host campaign targeting the corporate market, aligning all sales, services and marketing efforts • Conducted 146 definite site visits, up from 94 in 2022, staffed 48 conventions and sent 497 business leads • Booked more than 466,506 hotel room nights for leisure visitors in 2023 and 2024 • Reinstated representation of New Orleans in Germany, France, United Kingdom, and Mexico to help restore international tourism and contracted with a tourism sales and promotion company in India • Received multiple awards for excellence in destination management and customer service (see page eight) PR and Marketing • Brought the Today Show with Hoda and Jenna to Jackson Square for two national broadcasts

• Strengthened our relationship with Disney through promotion of Princess Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the film Haunted Mansion, helping broaden our image as a family destination Community • Helped 36 of 42 individuals living in the Tchoupitoulas homeless encampment move into permanent housing, effectively decommissioning the encampment and beautifying and securing the area • Created Music Month in October and launched a Musician’s Database on neworleans.com in partnership with WWOZ to give local artists a platform to promote themselves and their music to the world free of charge • Re-launched Everyone’s Welcome Here campaign to welcome LGBTQ+ visitors and persons of all identities and backgrounds So what does all of this mean? For our members and partners, tourism means business, guests, careers, and preserving our culture for future generations. For our residents, tourism means stronger infrastructure, economic development, tax savings for every family in Louisiana, civic pride, and rich cultural offerings superior to those of much larger cities. You have my commitment that our team will work harder than ever in 2024 to drive business and opportunity and strengthen our community for all. The travel and tourism industry matters! Sincerely,

• Placed more than 1,100 positive stories about New Orleans in media outlets worldwide • Welcomed hundreds of journalists to the city for customized visits

Who does your company serve in the community?

We provide recycling solutions for commercial clients, residential clients, and events and festivals. We customize programs to f it the size and needs of the organization/festival. We tr y to accommodate the mom-and-pop restaurant, which w ill give us one can of compost a week, w ith the same detail and care as the hotel which gives us 20

cans of compost a day. We also sell our f inished compost materials for local plantings and passionate growers.

How important do you feel your work is to the New Orleans community?

Where do you see your efforts taking the recycling effort in the city?

There is a much greater pur pose behind recy-

We are extremely proud of our 99% waste diversion rate. We don’t want recycling to be “out of sight and out of mind.” We want to welcome people into the process to help them understand how it works and to see f irsthand what can happen to their materia ls when they are treated properly. What makes your company different from other recycling companies?

We are f irm believers that the city of New Orleans can be a sustainability leader for the entire Gulf South. Multi-stream recycling, while popular in Europe, is relatively new to the U.S., but we believe New Orleans is the right city to lead the way in welcoming systematic recycling change. Our city is unique because New Orleanians are so passionate about getting involved in efforts to make our city better.

Jessica LaChute When and why did you join New Orleans & Company?

I have been a proud employee of New Orleans & Company for 23 years. I started as a part-time visitor information agent. After earning an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of New Orleans, I remained with New Orleans & Company for a full-time role in the Membership Department, which is where I still serve today. In 2004, I earned a Master’s degree in criminal justice from Loyola University, and could have changed careers, but I decided to stay at New Orleans & Company because I love our industry and serving our members.

What would surprise people most about our members?

Our 1,200 member businesses represent all aspects of the hospitality industry. Of course, that includes hotels, restaurants and cultural attractions. But most people do not know that we also have members who are printers, photographers,

graphic designers, and other small businesses that are necessary to successfully host visitors, conventions and special events. This is a complex industry and there are so many positions and career paths.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Our first goal as a destination marketing organization is to provide business, advocacy, professional development, and networking opportunities to our members. But I also love building relationships with them, learning about their businesses, creating ways to help them maximize their membership, but also being a sounding board, and offering advice or empathy. The past three years in particular have been tough, and people just need an encouraging word sometimes.

How has your job changed?

The world is different so we must think and deliver services differently. Our industry needs support on sustainability, accessibility

and workforce development. That’s why we have a much larger focus on hosting community events for the tourism industry such as job fairs, health fairs, overcoming recycling challenges, etc. and identifying ways we can positively impact our community and our members in these areas and others is extremely important. We know what makes New Orleans a better place to live and work, also makes it a great place to visit.

What keeps you here after 23 years?

I love the work that we do and the impact that we have. We have a fantastic group of employees who care about each other and are enthusiastic about our industry and our city. I feel connected to everyone here. We all want to move in the

same direction to make our city great. I have lived in New Orleans since the age of two, my family is here, and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. There are few places that do travel better than New Orleans, from our vibrant live-music scene, exquisite culinary experiences, to our endless cultural attractions. 2024 marks New Orleans & Company’s 64th year of inspiring travel to New Orleans and we are entering the year with optimism. A few highlights include the handoff for Super Bowl LIX, the renowned Bocuse d’Or and Pastry World Cup competitions, momentous anniversaries of New Orleans happenings, and the triennial art exhibition, Prospect.6.

Hotel Developments The Rubenstein family, known for their legendary men’s clothing store Rubenstein’s on the corner of Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue, are turning the upstairs of the building into a 40-room boutique hotel called the Rubenstein Hotel. Copper Vine is undergoing an expansion that will evolve the brand into Copper Vine Winepub & Inn, a ‘restaurant-first’ take on a traditional bed-and-breakfast with 11 rooms and increased restaurant floor plan for expanded dining and private events. Caesars Entertainment, Inc. is investing $435 million to expand, renovate and rebrand the 450-room Harrah’s Hotel and Casino with the 340-room hotel

Bocuse d’Or and Pastry World Cup This year, New Orleans will become the first city in the United States to host the prestigious international culinary competitions, Bocuse d’Or and Pastry World Cup. The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center will host the

two continental selections of the most prestigious international culinary and pastry competitions June 11-13, 2024, showcasing the best pastry chefs and cooks from all over the American continent.

Prospect.6 Prospect.6 New Orleans is a citywide contemporary art triennial and the first exhibition of its kind in the United States with a decade-long history. Every three years, the event brings new art to an old city by inviting artists from all over the world to create projects in a wide variety of venues spread throughout New Orleans. This event is organized by a leading voice in the curatorial field and serves as an invitation to experience the city through the eyes of artists.

Historic Anniversaries In 2024, the Essence Festival of Culture will celebrate its 30th anniversary over Fourth of July weekend at the Caesars Superdome and other venues in the city. This three-day celebration named for its founder and sponsoring magazine combines high-octane music performances with inspirational speakers and provocative conversations about gender, race, culture, and art, while welcoming hundreds of thousands of guests to the city each year.

2024 will also mark 20 years of our COOLinary restaurant campaign. Cuisine is an integral part of the history, fabric, and culture of New Orleans, and COOLinary New Orleans takes place every August to celebrate dining in New Orleans with participating restaurants offering specially priced pre fixe brunch and dinner menus.

Super Bowl LIX New Orleans and the State of Louisiana will host a record-tying 11th Super Bowl in 2025. Following the conclusion of Super Bowl LVIII in February, the Las Vegas Host Committee will officially hand off the football to the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee for Super Bowl LIX. This event will bring the eyes of the world, celebrities, titans of industry, and endless investment opportunities to New Orleans. “For decades, New Orleans & Company has played a significant role in attracting, marketing and hosting these types of events. The work we do day in and day out fosters relationships with a variety of customers and organizations, ensuring that New Orleans remains a preferred global destination,” said Walt Leger III, New Orleans & Company President and CEO. “We look forward to securing more business for 2024 and beyond, and showing the world why New Orleans is Built to Host.”

I would like to thank you for the outstanding welcome you have granted us with in Nola on the last two days. It was a true pleasure to meet you, it gives us even more pride and enthusiasm to make Bocuse d’Or and CMP Americas 2024 a great success.
