February Commander's Message
In writing this month’s message, I really did not know where to start or what topic I should write on. The nation still fighting COVID, the inauguration of a new President, the daily questions regarding the vaccines and their distribution, or the numerous concerns about how to maintain some kind of normal operations in Post 484.
As I thought about this more, I looked back to those millions of veterans who have served under numerous presidents both Democrat and Republican, and faced various crises in our nation and the world. Then I remembered what sets a veteran apart from all American citizens: we all took an oath to serve and protect our nation regardless of the political party in charge and the crisis facing us. Looking ahead in 2021, this nation has numerous challenges facing us, and I pray that our Veterans currently serving and American Legion will continue to be able to preserve our nation’s sovereignty and democracy.
As for the latter part of 2020 and early 2021, we had various situations forcing Post 484 to take on numerous personnel responsibility changes. These situations were due to COVID and illnesses of key individuals, and passing of key Legionnaires in the Post. As a result, hall rental is now being handled by Jake Suttmiller. Chaplain responsibility will be handled by Steve Hendel and assisted by Glenn Johnson and Denny Lahey. Dan Mugavin has stepped up and taken over duties for Chuck McDonald as Trustee. Currently the Post is looking for someone to take over the Adjutant position on the Executive Board, while Paul Coyne recovers from illness. Since we are speaking of Post responsibilities, Post elections will be on us before we know it. Those of you interested in running for Post 484 Officers positions need to contact me or Bill Harris.
OK, let’s discuss the Post for 2021. It is still unknown what the effect of the pandemic is going to have on our Post. We’re all praying that the various vaccines being issued will save lives and put our Post into some kind of daily consistency. The Post is going forward in planning this year’s activities with the assumption life’s going to get better. Our monthly meetings by all Legion family groups are being scheduled, as well as other events within COVID pandemic restrictions. Post breakfast will be scheduled monthly. Our Fish Fry is scheduled to start on February 19. We will need our normal amount of volunteers. Please contact Rick Ahlrichs regarding volunteering. Our plan regarding Fish Fry is to offer limited eat in and our standard carry out. Post quarter auctions are still being held monthly; please contact Vicki Monroe for details. The Post 484 Bar continues to do well. We are continuing to improve offerings to our patrons. For example, we now have food offerings Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Stop in and see our menu.
Future activities being considered are corn hole and dart nights during our cold weather months. More details will be forthcoming as we finalize these activities. We will still be offering Concealed Carry classes. As we move forward this year, our Executive Board is discussing various Post modifications and improvements to improve out Post. Hopefully members in all family groups will come out of hiding and become involved in these events in upcoming months.
I’ll close this long winded message by saying ”THANK YOU” to our Post members and anonymous donors who supported Post 484 by stepping up last year. God Bless you.
For God and Country,
Steven N. Ervin
Commander, Post 484
