TOCS: Teaching Online for
Cincinnati State

The Office of Online Learning launched the Teaching Online at Cincinnati State online course in 2013. The course was intended for both instructors who were interested in beginning to teach online and those who wished to improve their online delivery skills. Through the 2020 Spring Semester, online learning staff and faculty volunteer facilitators assisted 170 instructors using our locally developed course model.

After the COVID-19 pandemic began, we decided to use a packaged model for the course that required less content creation and management because all facilitators were either teaching or trying to support instructors in the pivot to fully online courses. This model is more self-paced, yet provides a lot of great information and resources for instructors wanting to explore or expand on their online teaching skills. Twenty-seven instructors have completed all modules and assignments in this iteration.

Designing and Teaching Online (embedded in the Teaching Online course) has six (6) easy-to-review modules to cover the basics created by Tyler Junior College and made available through the Multimedia Education Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) and the Skills Commons. This course is fully online and self-paced. While it is hosted outside of Blackboard, it is part of the complete package being facilitated by the TOCS team and offered to instructors. It will allow them to tie their new knowledge back to their Cincinnati State courses and the Blackboard learning management system.

This online opportunity, together with other resources, local support, and facilitation by the TOCS team is being offered through a Blackboard course called Teaching Online for Cincinnati State (2021). It is a fully-online learning opportunity with no in-person requirements. Opportunities to discuss course design and delivery using the Blackboard learning management system will also be part of the local focus with our facilitators. The course outcomes include:
  • Review elements of the Quality Matters program as they relate to course design and delivery
  • Apply methods of evaluating and addressing student readiness
  • Define and apply guidelines for communicating expectations to students
  • Describe the elements of a well-designed online course
  • Identify types of assessments and best practices for assessment integrity
  • Discuss communication techniques and ways to build community in an online course
  • Explore Blackboard approaches, processes, and tools needed for remote course delivery

The five main instructional modules conclude with a brief Discussion Board reflection on a related topic. The culminating reflection will be a Journal entry where learners will review the Quality Matters Emergency Remote Instruction Checklist and evaluate their readiness for teaching in the online environment. Completion of the five module reflections, the Final Journal Reflection, and the End of Course Feedback Survey will be required to earn a completion certificate for the course.

Library Corner: Online Edition

Are you disappointed in the sources your students are citing as “credible”?

Recommend they attend one of the Library’s Online Workshops in Zoom! After a quick, 15 minute demo on how to use the Library’s research databases to find full-text journal and news articles (and how to grab their citations), attendees can opt to continue working to find resources while a librarian is right there to help.

The next round of workshops will be Tuesday, October 26 & Wednesday, October 27 at 11am, 1pm, and 6pm each day. Register and check out the complete calendar online here.

Find more support for your online students (& you!) by visiting the Library website here.

Tips and Tricks: Zoom Attendance

Some instructors will manually write down attendance for every Zoom session they hold at Cincinnati State. But, did you know that there is an easier way to take attendance using Zoom's Report feature?

In this video, Paul DeNu will quickly show you how to view the attendance for each of your Zoom sessions, including what time a student entered, when they left, and their total duration in that meeting. Paul will also demonstrate how to download the attendance report directly to your computer: https://youtu.be/8oJOpvcLPdU.

Once you have viewed the video, click on https://cincinnatistate-edu.zoom.us to begin viewing your Zoom attendance reports.

Online Orientation Workshop

This Workshop is available to help students prepare for success in online courses at Cincinnati State, by providing hands-on experience in the online environment. The online workshop is free and self-paced. It takes 1 to 3 hours to complete, and students can stop and restart the orientation over several sessions. More information about the Workshop and how your students can register for it can be found here. Contact Paul DeNu for additional help.

Tips and Tricks: Blackboard

Go from course to course without going back to the My Courses on Blackboard list
  • Quickly switch between courses using the drop-down to the right of your course’s name at the top left of any course page.
  • Click on the drop down and then click on the course you want to go to.
  • That course will be displayed and you will be on the same page as the previous course if the courses both have that page. Otherwise you will be taken to the course’s Announcements page or its start page.

Manage My Courses on Blackboard Course Module Settings: Remove courses from list and reorder courses
  • Click on the “gear” icon at the top right of the My Courses on Blackboard module.
  • Uncheck ALL boxes in all columns for courses you want to hide from your list (usually older courses), this only hides them and does not delete them from your list
  • To move a course to another position in your list, use the “reorder” arrow (up and down pointing arrow) to the far left of any course to drag it to a new location.
  • Click Submit at the bottom right of the page to apply all changes and return to the MYCSTATE page.
