Alan Golding earned his BA from the University of Exeter and his MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. He teaches American literature and poetry and poetics of the long twentieth century. He is the author of From Outlaw to Classic: Canons in American Poetry (1995), and of numerous essays on modernist and contemporary poetry. His book Writing Into the Future: New American Poetries from The Dial to the Digital is forthcoming from the University of Alabama Press in 2022. His current book project: Isn’t the Avant-Garde Always Pedagogical, a book on experimental poetics and / as pedagogy. 

He teaches courses on American poetry, modern and contemporary American literature, the history and theory of the avant-garde, and poetry and poetics. He co-edits the Iowa Series on Contemporary North American Poetry. He is also a member of the editorial boards of Contemporary Literature and Twentieth-Century Literature, and of the advisory board of the University of Alabama Press series on Modern and Contemporary Poetics and the Edinburgh Press series, Edinburgh Critical Studies in Avant-Garde Writing.
