Robert Talmadge Maupin Sr., 94, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Baptist Health Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Robert Talmadge Maupin Sr. was born in Louisville, Kentucky on December 20, 1928, to the late Miller and Mary Maupin. In 1946, Mr. Maupin graduated valedictorian of his class at Central High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He went on to graduate with honors from the University of Louisville’s Municipal College in 1950 with a B.S. in Physics. Also, Mr. Maupin was the first African American to graduate with a master’s degree in physics at the University of Louisville in 1952. He was a pioneer in integrating the University of Louisville’s graduate physics program. Mr. Maupin went on to work for the Department of the Army in Washington D.C. at the Harry Diamond Labs and Bureau of Standards as a civilian scientist, in 1953. He served for two years as an associate professor of physics at the University of the District of Columbia.  While working in DC, Mr. Maupin married Delores (Henderson) Maupin in 1957. In 1963 they had their first and only child Robert Maupin Jr.. Robert Talmadge Maupin Sr. was a dedicated member of the Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Takoma Park, Maryland where he was able to integrate the congregation. During his time in Takoma Park, Maryland area, he served as a pathfinder leader, and a deacon at the Sligo Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He was an avid musician and played the trombone with both college orchestras and local marching bands in Washington DC. Mr. and Mrs. Maupin were married for 47 years until her passing in 2005. He and his wife lived in the Washington DC/Maryland area for over forty years. He later moved back to Louisville, Kentucky in 2007. He then joined the Magazine Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Throughout his life, Mr. Maupin was an avid photographer, cyclist, and loved to spend time out in nature. He loved plants and wildflowers evidenced by his having a minor in Botany as a college student. He also was an avid wildflower photographer. This led Mr. Maupin to produce his wildflower photography book, Uncle Bob’s Flower Garden. in his retirement while at his residence in the Treyton Oaks in Louisville, Kentucky.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Milburn Maupin and Carlyle Maupin.

Mr. Maupin is survived by his son, Dr. Robert (Troylynn) Maupin Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana; two granddaughters, Kyla L. Maupin of New Orleans, Louisianna, Kenadi R. Maupin of New Orleans, Louisiana; three sisters, Idabeth Jacob of Huntsville, Alabama, Roslyn Anderson of Huntsville, Alabama, Lolita McRoy of Kansas City, Missouri; one brother, LaVaunt Maupin of St. Louis, Missouri; a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Funeral Services will be 12:00 p.m., Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Magazine Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church with the Senior Pastor Hasani Tait officiating.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m., Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Magazine Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mr. Maupin's interment will be Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Parklawn Cemetery Memorial Park in Rockville, Maryland.
