Mattie's is located in the same building as St. Stephen's Church. Considering the building is a former school, the distance between the church's sanctuary and Mattie's is a couple of double doors and a few hallways. Besides the entrance used for worship and service, there is an entrance much closer to the restaurant, which is also near the Family Center.
I don't believe they're open every day or even at least 5 days a week. I do know they're open on Sundays and have a Friday fish fry (12p to 5p).
Customers pay up front (no tipping option). Credit cards are accepted. A lot of food is served either dine-in or take home. There are plenty of tables in the large room that's flooded with the natural outdoor daylight. The cost for a plate is $11 and includes meat, 2 sides (from a selection of 3-4), cornbread, salad or potatoe salad, dessert and a drink (tea, lemonade, water). I'm not sure if refill is free for dine-in customers or if the food options vary on certain days (beside Friday's fish fry, which I'm looking forward to checking out - catfish or whiting are the choices).
The employees are very friendly, helpful and engaging.
Between my mother and I we got fried chicken, meatloaf, mac and cheese, green beans, collards, cornbread, peach cobbler, potatoe salad, tea and lemonade. $22 total. First of all, we were given a lot of food. Two to three helpings could easily be achieved.
My favorites in terms of flavoring with seasoning were the fried chicken (breast and wing - both were large pieces w/ light breading), cornbread (very moist and tasty - not mushy texture), potatoe salad (lots of fresh, crunchy ingredients) and the mac and cheese (lots of cheese, but not too much and not dry).
The collards, green beans, meatloaf and peach cobbler were all good, but lacked a bit of seasoning for me, but my mom really enjoyed them. I wonder if not much salt is used, purposefully - and if so, that's a good thing. But...I can say the coloring was so vibrant and fresh looking. Oh...and the collard greens were picked quite well...hardly no stems at all - seriously.
Both the tea and lemonade were delicious. Both of which I don't normally drink, but can say they were good and not overly sweetened.Helpful 41Thanks 0Love this 35Oh no 0
