Mary Makris, age 70 of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on January 27, 2024. She was born on December 11, 1953 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

She graduated from South Side High School and went on to receive her B.A. from Indiana University, her M.A. from the University of Kansas and her PhD from Rutgers University. She taught Spanish at the University of Louisville. Mary loved to travel, particularly to Spain. She also loved her dogs. She enjoyed her retirement, which, sadly, only lasted for a few months. She had been looking forward to taking up needlework again and traveling to Crete to reconnect with family there.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Harry and Antonia (Patrelakis) Makris, and her close cousin Mary Makreas.

She is survived by her sister Bessie Makris of Fort Wayne, her aunts Zabia Makreas of Fort Wayne and Katina Makridakis of Crete, Greece. She is also survived by numerous cousins in Indiana, California, New York and Greece.

Funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m., Monday, February 5, 2024, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 930 Ormsby Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40242. Visitation 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Father Jon Boukis will officiate.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 6, at the Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with Father Cosmin Sicoe officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 930 Ormsby Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40242, or the Animal Care Society of Louisville, 12207 Westport Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40245.
