Land Acknowledgement

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association has members in the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Our annual meeting will be in Richmond, Virginia.

We would like to acknowledge that the lands we are meeting on are the traditional lands and past, present, and future homes of the Powhatan Confederacy. We acknowledge the role of the Powhatan as the traditional custodians of these lands, and we pay respect to their elders past, present and emerging.

We acknowledge that truth is critical to ongoing mutual respect and connection. A land acknowledgment is a recognition of truth - that most of us living in what is now known as the United States of America live here as guests - and as information professionals we must commit to learning from and with the Indigenous communities among whom we live. In addition, in our role as health information professionals we acknowledge that Indigenous people today may face a lack of access to quality healthcare services, representation in health sciences research, and within the literature. We endeavor to raise awareness of these issues when supporting health professionals or patients and seek meaningful partnership with the Indigenous peoples of our communities to ensure they are the ones who determine what is best for the health and well-being of current and future generations.

Awareness of the history of a land and its indigenous peoples involves more than making a blanket statement. If you have not already done so, consider learning more at Native Land, the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, or from resources offered by your local tribe, band or nation.

You can learn more through the American Indian Library Association (https://ailanet.org), which is focused on improving information and library services for American Indians. If you are interested in supporting the Powhatan Confederacy please consider contributing to the Pamunkey Tribe (https://pamunkey.org/), one of the tribes of the Powhatan Confederacy. Alternatively, please consider donating to one of the following organizations that support Native Americans throughout the country:
