Beach Women’s Soccer Set to Begin Conference Play This Week

The Beach opens Big West action at home against UC San Diego and Hawaii.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State will begin conference play this week as they host UC San Diego on Thursday and Hawaii on Sunday. Game times for both are 6:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Beach ended their non-conference schedule with losses against Montana and Cal last week. They enter Big West play with a 3-4-1 record.
• Long Beach State outshot Montana 26-4, but a goal in the 86th minute gave the Grizzlies the 1-0 lead. Lena Silano became the fourth player in program history to ever record 10 shots in a single-game.
• In a physical match against Cal, the Beach fell 2-0 to the Golden Bears. Both goals came in the first 10 minutes of the second half with one being on a PK.
 
CONFERENCE PLAY IS HERE
• With eight non-conference games complete, Long Beach State opens up Big West action this week, playing host to UC San Diego and Hawaii.
• Since 1998, when the program joined the Big West Conference, the Beach is 12-7-3 all-time in conference openers. When they open conference play at home, the team is 6-4-2.
• The Beach has not lost a conference opener since 2014. In those five matches, they are 3-0-2 with the most recent decision being a 2-1 victory over Cal Poly in 2019.
 
FAVORITES TO WIN IT ALL
• The Big West preseason poll was announced on Thursday, Aug. 12 and the Beach found themselves in the top spot with 106 points, edging out defending champion Cal State Fullerton by two points. In addition to the top spot in the poll, senior defender Kaitlin Fregulia was named to the preseason All-Conference Team. She was the lone Beach representative and one of just two defenders on the list.
 
A LEAGUE LEADING DEFENSE
• Long Beach State has showcased they have one of the best defenses in the league this season. They're .820 save percentage thus far leads the Big West while their 1.13 goals allowed per game ranks tied for first.
 
AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS
• Junior Lena Silano finds herself all over the top of the Big West leaderboards through the first eight games of the season:
              -Shots on Goal: 14 (1st)
              - SOG/game: 1.75 (1st)
              - Game-Winners: 2 (T-1st)
              - Total Points: 10 (T-1st)
              -Total Shots: 29 (T-1st)
              -Shots/game: 3.63 (T-1st)

              -Total Points: 10 (T-2nd)
              - Total Goals: 4 (T-2nd)
              - Goals/game: .500 (T-2nd)
 
SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS
• Despite the result against Montana, the Beach had a near historic offensive performance. The team totaled 26 shots, 13 in each half, the most since October 11, 2018 against Cal Poly. The single-game program record is 34 set in 2006.
• Leading the barrage of shots on Thursday was Lena Silano, who recorded 10 against the Grizzlies. It is tied for third most by a single player for a game in program history and the most since September of 2006.
 
THE BRICK WALL IN NET
Morgan Houston-Shepherd continues to be a force in goal for the Beach to start her career. The redshirt freshman finished non-conference play ranked number one in the Big West with an .816 save percentage. Her 1.125 Goals Against Average ranks second and her 40 total saves is the third most in the league.
 
SILANO'S SCORING
• Junior forward Lena Silano's game-tying goal against Washington marked her fourth goal of the season and gave her 10 total points through the team's first six games.
• She is the fastest to reach 10 points in a season since Ashley Gonzales also did it in six games back in 2014. The record is five games by Nadia Link in 2011 and 2012.
 
MAURICIO'S DYNASTY
• Prior to Coach Ingrassia taking the helm of Long Beach State, the team had not had a winning record in the Big West Conference. Since he took over in 2004, the Beach has been over .500 in all but three seasons (14-of-17).
• Over the the last decade, the Beach has been a dominant force in the Big West Conference claiming four Big West Tournament titles and two regular season titles. They have been to the conference tournament finals six different times since 2010.
• Beyond the Big West Conference, Long Beach State has made their presence known nationally as well. Since 2008, the team has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances including an Elite 8 appearance in 2011. That is the furthest run by any team in the Big West.
 
SCOUTING THE TRITONS
• UC San Diego begins conference play with a 2-5-1 overall record and are coming off a 4-1 loss to Grand Canyon last Sunday. Their two wins came against Southern Utah and CSUN.
• The Tritons have been outscored 18-9 thus far this season while being outshot 123-90.
• The UCSD offense is led by Kennedy Carter's four goals and nine points. Caitlin McCarthy has also found the back of the net multiple times, recording two goals along with two assists.
• The time in goal has been split, but Keara Fitzgerald has seen more minutes and owns a 2-3 record. She owns a .667 save percentage totaling 22 saves in her five games.
• Long Beach State leads the all-time series 6-0-1, but the last meeting was back in 1986. This game also marks UCSD's first Big West Conference matchup.
 
SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE
• Hawaii begins conference play without a victory thus far, sporting a 0-4-1 record.
• The Rainbow Wahine have only scored twice this season, being outscored 16-2 through five games.
• Krista Peterson and Kelci Sumida are responsible for the two goals and total just 11 shots between the two of them.
• Lauren Marquez has started all five games in goal for UH allowing 12 goals and sporting a .676 save percentage.
• The Beach leads the all-time series 8-2-4 and have not lost since 2004. In their last 11 meetings, LBSU is 8-0-3 and have outscored the Rainbow Wahine, 27-8 in the span.
