Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus 2 (RHDV2)

RHDV2 is a highly contagious disease affecting domestic and wild rabbits. RHDV2 is considered a foreign animal disease and should be reported to the State Veterinarian once it is suspected or diagnosed by a veterinarian.

In Sept 2022, RHDV2 was detected in a population of feral rabbits in South Carolina (read Clemson News article here).

No licensed vaccines for RHDV2 are available in the United States, but there is an experimental, unlicensed vaccine manufactured by Medgene Labs that was granted Emergency Use Authorization in South Carolina for domesticated rabbits. If you are a veterinarian in need of more information regarding the Medgene Labs’ RHDV2 experimental vaccine, please contact Dr. Kathryn MacDonald (contact information below).
